I have a 98 model and I have just bought some new levers off a 99 but they don't fit as they or a lot thicker so I need a new bracket when did they change to the thicker levers ?

The levers are the same from 98-01. Neither of those in the pics are stock. The stock ones were aluminum. See attachemnt

The carbon one looks to thin and the black/red one looks like the one that should fit. Did you buy the bike 2nd hand? MAybe somebody replaced both the brake and clutch lever assemblies in the past.

Thanks for the info yes bike second hand so I wonder what bracket I have fitted on my bike then I no that the carbon ones have been fitted after so I need to change the brackets then.

The brake lever attaches to the master cylinder and the clutch lever does go to a bracket which is aprt of the whole clutch lever assembly.

Are both your levers the same? You will have to get the correct master cylinder for your front brake lever to attach properly - pretty sure you will anyhow. For the clutch side you would have to find a used assembly or try and buy one new which would be costly.

I think it would be easier for you to find levers that are the same thickness of the ones you took off vs. trying to find the required assemblies to mount your new levers to.

The levers for the 98 are different then the 99. I'm 100% positive on that. I can't remember, but to install the 99+ levers on the 98 you need to purchase one of the mounting assemblies for the clutch I believe? I'm going off memory, but one of the levers is different for sure and you need that assembly off the 99 to be able to install the 99+ lever on your 98.

Nope there was a difference between 98 to 99 on the brake lever side, caused a few bikes to have brakes lock on when using aftermarket brake levers

I found a couple of brackets on eBay for a 2000 model so I sent him email asking about the thickness and he said it was for the thin type lever so that was me lost off with the years

I have a Y2K R1 and attached is a pic of the stock levers that came with the bike. They are thick - not thin (compare to your pics - its like the black/red ones). Therfore the Y2K "bracket" would be thick not thin....

Are both your levers (brake and Clutch) the same thickness? I googled a bit after Corey' post and it does seem like the clutch lever was different (for some models) in 98 vs. 99. Having said that a lot of sights sya that their clutch and brake levers fit for 98-01.... go figure..

blue streak: a lot of them are wrong. Last I knew crg said theirs would fit when It wouldn't. Pazzo had the same issue, but changed it quickly about 8 years ago, etc. I know that one of the levers is different and the other is the same. I'll find out more and post it up asap.

The clutch is different. Put a 99 R1 clutch on a 98 and then you can run the 99-01 levers.

Just put my new brake lever on fitted straight on no probs I have ordered a clutch bracket off eBay off a 2000 model only £10 he says its got a 15 mm gap so that should be the right one fingers crossed

Corey - I better not order something for my bike that you say will fit it and it turns out not to! . Great catch on the diff clutch handles - I assumed out of gate that if brake lever fit so would clutch....
