RS-3 shorty?

Recently my muffler and mid-pipe was stolen from my truck while moving from the old apartment to the new loft, I have been working on finding a inexpensive misplacement quick.

Today I scored a RS-3 aluminum slip on that has a dent. No biggie as Ive seen a few "shorty" mods done to them... I never liked the look of 20" of can on the side of the 2000 model R1 anyways...

Does anyone have any insight on how much more noise I will get from shortening this muffler? I do plan on getting new packing when its all re-assembled with new components...

Also, what options do I have for a mid pipe?

Ok I have it cut down and ready to repack. The original steel wool that wrapped the baffle crumbled when I pulled it out. Is it necessary to put something similar back on before repacking? If so, what?
