The Deer won
Was riding into work Monday morning on my new 2011 R1 (left over 2011) at 4:30 am, when out of nowhere a deer ran out of the ditch along the highway right into my path. I hit it right in the rib area at around 65mph. Needless to say with only 3200 miles on my R1 and only 7 weeks old it is totaled. Insurance co. is suppose to call in next couple days with settlement offer. If they go by Kelly Blue Book I should come out OK, we'll see. I broke my left arm, shattered my wrist, broke all 4 fingers on left hand and bruised #8 vertibra. Lotts of brusing on my legs and chest area. Had on all my gear, but now that too is trashed. Thank god for insurance. Ride safe all, as it is deer season again.

Did not have time to react, it came from nowhere, pretty much hit it square onin it's side, it glanced me to the right, into the ditch and the grass was wet at that time of morning here in florida. I went into a slide(left side) and ended up in about a foot of water in ditch area along highway. Tucked front wheel back against fairing, all plastics wasted. Never touched the brakes, wish now I had not tried to ride it out. I have to go to a ortho surgen on friday to see about putting my wrist back together and reattatching the tendons and ligiments in my fingers. I have plenty of time to find another R1, as they are saying lotts of rehab.

I know about ditches I worry about just this every time out, I have had two close ones this season. One of them I could have slapped on the ass as I went by at 80. Was it night time? or day.

But yea, that's one helluva wreck. Around here, the deer are HORRIBLE. Completely overpopulated. You have to be on your P's and Q's because the deer are everywhere. Even then it doesn't always avoid the inevitable (i.e. Your situation)
Good luck on the recovery. Rehab sucks balls. I had to do months of PT for my knee.

You never said what happened to the deer except you "pretty much hit it square on its side". So was it raodkill or did it stumble off into the woods? Since you said the "deer won" I am guessing it might have survived...

The ambulance took me away before the state police got there, but they said that they shot the deer. No pics as I was at ER till late that evening and it was already towed away. Geico called today and said $11934.00 was repair estimate. They totaled it and said i should get check in a few days. Not in a hurry to replace though since i am looking at rehab after ortho surgery on my wrist and hand. Probably look at 2013 R1 as replacement. Antilock brakes and traction control sound interesting. Ride safe all.

At least it wasn't your right hand. What would you do with all that free time??? Although there are some guys around here that would love to help you out.
