Just bought 2012 - Y-pipe and Exhaust question
Hi guys,
I'm from Melbourne Aus and being a previous 2003 R1 owner, i sold my bike after getting married.
Just went out and bought a 2012 R1 today and it will come installed with GYTR Slip-on pipes.
I also have bought a Danmoto y-pipe. I did this because for $120 AUS, i'm happy to get rid of it if the quality is not great.
So my questions is, can i fit the Y-pipe wihtout remapping? I've been reading so much about Bazzaz and Flashtune but i don't know if it's all necessary. Do i really need to buy one of these to do any mapping changes or can a workshop with a dyno adjust the stock ECU?
Will the slipons and y-pipe without a ECU retune get rid of the dreaded 5000RPM dip ? I know a remap will definitely help but is it necessary now? If i do by a Bazzaz or similar, do i need to buy a different Y-pipe?
Any advice from somebody in Melbourne on a good workshop with Dyno facilities would also be great.
Thanks heaps and looking forward to jumping on the 2012!

Hey mate,
I'm from Canberra have the same bike as you and have y pipe and slipons..
in answer to your question it is a must to retune the bike when you swapout the y pipe...sorry... been there done that..
now to get the bike going really well you can flash the ECU to fix the fueling..buy the flashtune interface and flash as may times as you need..
then to get it going its best just add a PCV and Autotune to the Flashed ECU then it will go the way it should.

Good advice above. The flashtune won't net a lot of power for you the way it does in the US because your bike isn't restricted. It's still a very valuable tool, with speedo correction, throttle map adjustments, engine braking adjustments, disabling AIS, Quickshifting, etc etc.

So what happens if I ride without any tuning changes ? Should I leave the y pipe off until I do ?

Get a Bazzaz or PC5,with ZAFM or Autotune before installing. Without a "tune", it probably won't run too well, and will be very lean. Not good at all, especially for a new engine thats being broken in.

Leave the Y pipe off at lest until you get the ECU flashed. You can run with the cans until then.
