Ian's 04 R1 Build Thread
Figured that as a new member it was only appropriate to make a build thread to chronicle the cleanup and restoration of my new '04. I'm a former R1 owner of sorts - my ex had a '05 that I loved to death and I tried to buy repeatedly. Just as I sort of became the owner (long story involving a lot of bills and debts) I had to sell the bike to cover medical bills and so she could get something different to ride (medical reasons, again, long story). I wanted one since and when she broke up with me not long ago I decided it was time to do a little of what I wanted and I started looking for another bike. Actually at the time I was looking for a POS stunt bike to learn better wheelie control on but at random I was offered a nice '04 R1 instead. The bike had been laid down at the track and had the scuffs to prove it, but the frame sliders protected the important stuff and I can't complain about getting a nice R1 for $3k. Especially one with graves slip-ons and Y pipe, vortex rear sets, and some nice CF bits.
Unfortunately for my progress, only days after I picked up the bike I had it on my lift with the wheels off to get some fresh rubber. Overnight the lift settled down and the ramp propped against the side of it slid up, caught the R1 and dumped it onto my SV650. The R1 actually came out pretty well - the only damage was a cracked intake tube and dented tank, but it did pretty much force my hand on the decision to paint the bike. Fortunately the classifieds on here have saved the day and provided not only a replacement for the dented tank, but also the tail fairing and side fairings that were damaged before I owned the bike.
Current plans are to do a complete cosmetic restoration of the bike. Paint, bodywork on existing scuffs, new frame sliders and bar ends, new mirror (need to start looking for one of those in the classifieds...) and then go through some of the more worn bits like the top triple clamp and get them cleaned up and refinished.
I'm not likely to do a lot with performance mods for a while. The power is more than enough for what I plan on doing with the bike. I do think a power commander and dyno tune will be in order to make sure that everything is well sorted for the mods that are on the bike, but that's not really for power, just safety and throttle response.
What performance tuning I do will be focused on the suspension. For now I'm an amateur on the track so just getting the suspension set up for my weight will be good enough, but eventually as I progress I'll likely upgrade to some nicer bits to help me on track.
