What's the best way to pull a root?

What kind? Usually cut all around it with a shovel, tie a rope, pull it out with whatever machine you have i.e quad, truck, lawn mower

Use a high pressure water hose and wash enough soil away to expose the smaller roots. Cut those and the rest is easy.

I've cut roots with a reciprocating saw then pulled with a truck but I wish I'd have thought about the water hose mentioned above. Still easier than I had thought it would be.
