Just have all your paperwork handy. Especially the info on the seller.

I'm literally dealing with this now on the motorcycle I tried to trade in for my R1. I had NO idea there was an issue with the VIN's. One of the VIN's had a stolen flag from ages ago, the DOL removed it but now I'm trying to find the guy who technically last owned it to ask him if I can keep it, lol.
The dude I bought the bike from had no idea either, or so he says. no way to be sure of course.
You can ask the DOL to run a VIN if it's a full VIN.

In Cali you have to take the motor in to the Patrol Office for them to run it and then confiscate if it is hot.

Oh man, no way on that here, hahah. The Sheriff AND the state patrol deferred me to the DOL, and the DOL told me it was a civil matter. Maybe WA just cares less. I also don't know how many bikes are stolen here. I see tons parked in the ways described as a "no-no"

yeah CA is very strict on it, in this state both engine and VIN numbers are on the pink slip, and both have to be verified by the CHP when bringing in an out of state vehicle/motorcycle. There is a way to check if it is hot or which frame goes with which motor, but I do not know the details of how... Best bet is to call the number in and have them run it.
