What is it worth?
Hey guys, quick question. What is a 04 R1 with a bad connecting rod worth? The engine is bone stock and I've added minor add (blinkers and solo seat) on.
I'm contemplating replacing the engine, but I'm cautious about purchasing a used engine. Thoughts?

I'd think you would make a hell of a lot more by parting it out

Its an 04 with a bad motor, its not worth much honestly but then you might run across an idiot who thinks he knows what hes doing Its not worth more than 1500.00 by the time you buy motor and put in all that labor you can pick up the same 04 for that money with no labor.

Looks like a clean one, if it were mine I would repair it (myself) or get a used engine. Not worth much with a bad engine, would be a good buy for $2k or so for someone that just crashed and destroyed thiers. I agree parting out will get more $$ than its currently worth as a whole.

unless you have a special attachment to it, the best financial decision will be part it out. But since when has anything to do with motorcycles been about the best financial decision

I'd still bet that unless you are driving something that gets <15mpg and you drive a long way for commuting..a 250 wouldn't pay for itself as quick as you think once you factor in maintenance, insurance, gear, and the bike itself.

250>anything under 40mpg strictly commuting. Cars need maintenance too, oil, 4 tires instead of two. Between that and cost itself, more expensive insurance, tags cost more.

sorry...I live in a climate you aren't riding any motorcycle all year so you'd have to have the 250 in addition to a car. You are correct if you have the 250 INSTEAD of a car, but then that would be the same as a 600 and even if you are nice to a litre bike those would be less costly than a lot of cars..but it would start to even out on mileage at that point.

if you plan on keeping it replace the engine. i blew mine and replaced it and couldnt be happier. i spent about 3 grand but i would have spent way more trying to buy the latest and greatest new sport bike. plus, if you ever do change your mind down the road you can still get something decent for it whether you trade it in somewhere or sell outright.
