Garage Door Opener, SECRET button!

Garage Door Opener, Secret Button!
I was reviewing some threads about installing a Garage Door Opener on the bike.

I started asking R6 Untouchable about how to do it and he walked me through the steps.

It's a time consuming project but I think it's pretty cool. I wired up my bike with a button that allows me to open and close my garage door. Basically, I wired into the Garage door opener and then put a button next to my headlights high beam/low beam switch. No more fishing through my pockets for a remote.

I used a Genie Intellicode remote for my project.

Here's where I wired in.

Here's the button I used from Radio Shack. It's a SPST "MOMENTARY" button.

Cool. Where did you mount the rest of it? And does it still use a little battery?

I initially was going to use the Motorcycle Battery (12v) because the little battery on the remote is also a 12v battery. This didn't work. Sure fried the shit out of my little remote though.

Good thing I had a back up to my back up remote. I mounted it under the rear seat (so it wouldn't get wet) and am going to use the little battery with it. I used Velcro and stuck it up to the right side of the inside of the trunk. I could have saved some wire by mounting up closer to the clip on but decided being able to reach it quick would be more important. (in case I need to change the battery) Also, keeping it dry is another important factor.

Hope that info helps clear it up !

Looks really trick. I probably will wind up doing something like that. As for now, I carry my remote in my left pocket inside my motorcycle jacket. I make sure the button is facing frontwards and not towards me. When I'm nearing my house I just press the button through my jacket. Looks gay though, like I'm pressing my left nipple.

You could always keep the remote attached to your key while on the ignition
Then again, this way you dont have to let go the clipons to open the door

I used to carry mine in my front left pocket too. I've gotten caught in a couple rain storms and have noticed that the remote stopped working as well. Under closer inspection all the metal parts on the circuit board were (not rusting) but had some sort of build up on it. It looked like it was from moisture to me.

I had seen this idea somewhere on this forum. (I think member T Pole did it) But I haven't seen it mounted next to the light switch.

Question... What did you use to bore the hole into the plastic? A standard drill bit?

In this months Sport Rider, or maybe Cycle World, in the products review section there is a relay that you can buy that wires into your headlights. All you have to do is flash you headlights(low/high) when you pull in and it sends the signal to open your garage door. It was under $60. I am building a house now and think I will definately buy one of these and wire it in.

BTW, I think I am going to take some pics of my home construction in different phases and post. They actually just started framing up the foundation today.

I just used a small drill bit and gradually stepped up until I got to the final size which was a 1/2 drill bit.
