top speed
I've read the magazines and am being told 158 is top speed. I've hit 162mph on a local freeway bone stock. Has anyone else tried and gone faster? stock or not.

I've seen 170 on the speedometer and it was still accelerating. But of course, you have to factor in speedometer error. I've read the top speed of the 02 R1's is about 169mph. So with a 5% error, my speed was about 161.5mph

Are there any r6's tried, I know all you guy's with R1 are nice and quick. I soon hope to get an R1 but I have to wait to cough up the dough.
by the way, today I nailed 165mph on my 03 R6. My new rec.

I hit 170 on my 03 R6! 
Damn, thats the fastest i've ever been and it was FAST!
My first attempt at top speed i only hit 163 and thought it was topped out...but i figured it couldn't be...next time i tried, i hit 170...i still had 1000rpm's to go, if not more...

hey KID if thats stock thats good.
I think I'm going to draft my buddy on his '03 R1 next time I try. Only prob is that he complained of his front end getting sloppy around 160+. I wasn't to sure what that was all about

i did 170mph on a cool night and there was not wind at all...keep in mind that it was 170 indicated!

all these indicated top speeds are worthless as reference.
I've seen 168 by GPS. thats probably near top speed.

considering the fact that the 2002 R1 does 169mph (actual) you pretty much hit the "real" top speed

JUST PROVIDING SOME NUMBERS...
AS I HAVE WRITTEN IN MANY OF MY MAGAZINES RANGING FROM CYCLE WORLD AND MOTORCYCLIST:
PRIOR THE 2002/3 R1 170 MPH TOP GEAR SPEED ON MOST MAGAZINES.
2003 R6 GOES 158 MPH ON RADAR.
2003 600RR DOES 162.2 ON RADAR.
2003 GSX-R600 GOES 158.8 ON RADAR.
2003 ZX-6R DOES 158.5
PRIOR 2003:
CAN FIGURE A LITTLE SLOWER......SPEEDO IS OFF BUT IT SHOWS ALOT HIGHER THEN 170 FOR THE R1 SOME GUYS HAVE SEEN 190 OR SO WHICH BRINGS THE REAL FIGURE AT 170 FOR THE R1.

Theoretical Top Speed.
Well you can figure out what the max theoretical speed is
for the R1. But, figure that you can't reach it since
aerodynamic drag is likely to overcome the torque of the
engine.
So, here we go.
R1 Engine Redline 11,750 RPM
R1 Primary Reduction Ratio 43/68
R1 6th Gear Ratio 26/29
R1 Final Reduction Ratio 16/43
R1 Rear Tire (estimated) 190/50/17
Alright here comes the math......
11750*(43/68)*(26/29)*(16/43)*(((190*.5*(1/25.4))+17/2)*2*pi)*(1/12)*(1/5280)*(60/1)
Gives:
180.521 MPH Theoretical Top speed with stock gearing and stock rear wheel.
In reality areodynamic drag will likely stop you short of that speed.
Get a steering damper before heading out for your top speed run... Please......
