2002 R1 OPINIONS : Yamaha R1 Forum

WELL NOW THAT WE ALL HAVE SEEN FOR SURE WHAT THE NEW R1 IS GOING TO BE I AM INTRESTED IN WHAT EVERYONE THINKS.

I FEEL AS THOUGH WE HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF. ONLY 3 POUNDS WEIGHT REDUCTION? YAMAHA HAD THE CAPABILITY TO KICK THE REST OF THE SPORTBIKES IN THE WORLD IN THE NUTS AGAIN, AND YET THEY DIDN'T .

THIS WON'T EVEN MAKE THEM THE LIGHTEST LITER BIKE IN STOCK FORM. I KNOW IT WILL BE THE BEST BUT I WAS LOOKING FOR THE KICK IN THE NUTS THE 98 R1 GAVE.

But, YES, you're right. EVERYONE (oops) wanted something else than what was given us. But I've talked to a few friends and they all seem very good about the bike already. It is building on them .. "a damn fine bike".

Maybe next year

Not what I thought for sure but it does look sweet. I anticipate the next major redesign already though.

They claim the bike will feel light? Who knows. If it feels lighter that is all that matters.

I've heard from a few 'secret' sources that the bike has an absolutely STOOOOPID midrange.
that midrange is what I'm interested in. I want huge mo-fo'n power wheelies out of slower corners.
Can you tell I'm excited?

Midrange and handling rule the street! If you go out to duel with your buddies, the launches are now limited by the wheelie factor, and things are usually settled by the time things get near the top end. IF the new R1 can pound it's opponents with handling and midrange, we have a new winner; if not, we have to wait for the next contender. Bring it on!

Doesn't the R1 update every 2 years? That's a long wait.

ok, im a newbie and i want a R1 oh so bad. about my question. i just wanna ride, but i just wanna ride on a R1. i was told that i could get one as long as i am careful as hell til i get used to riding it, any truth to that? i come here b/c teh knuckleheads at cycleworld.com are @$$holes. any advice? i mean if the R1 is much to powerful then ill reconsider, but i heard its just as easy to handle as a light bike is ( like a kawasaki 500r), but just a bigger engine. am i talking out my ass or any truth to this? i luv the R1 though.....

Newbie? First bike? New rider? If the answer is yes,yes,yes, then I wouldn't recommend an R1 as a first bike. I read on another post that a guy's friend bought an R1 as his first bike, and he was happy that in about 2 weeks he was going to have a crashed R1 to turn into a race bike. Funny, eh? It took 4 weeks; the guy was OK, but it is the all too common end for newbies on superbikes. Some rare people have the self control and self awareness to ride within their limits, and make it through, but the statistics aren't in your favor. If money is an issue, the R1(or any fully fared bike) can be expensive to fix after the inevitable learning experiences

I love the new bike. The black frame. The fuel injection. THis bike will rock. I just don't want to wait till feburary to see the tests rides. This is going to suck!

well, i dont want anybody to kill themselves on there first bike (me for instance), but my r1 is my first bike. when i picked it up i was shaking from excitement and fear. THIS IS A BIG BIKE! very light ( i have only sat on other bikes and by far this is the lightest one) and very powerful. if you get the r1 (no one could talk me out of getting an r1) please, please, please be very careful and ride within your means. take a safety course.i have had my bike 4 months and (knock on would) have not dropped it. control your urges to open it up when you arent comfortable yet and WATCH OUT FOR OTHER DRIVERS!!!
p.s. dont worry about what anybody says about your "chicken strips".if you worry and try to get rid of them you'll drop it (maybe).

Well, everybody has good ideas, and thanks for that, the most important thing is to take a safety course, good helmet, and some full leathers, don't sacrafic safety for style, you might look like a dork but you'll look like an ass all scraped up because you would've rather put on sweats, tenise shoes, and a short sleeve shirt. Don't be a squid, ride withing your limits, and don't let anybody intimidate you to do anything that you're not capable of doing.

Its funny how people in this forum and others can judge the '02 R1 when its not even available for a test ride yet. Personally, I like the new style and from the Yamahas that I've owned I'm sure the mechanicals will be up to their ususal standards. The real question is the EFI because that's where other companies have trouble too. The design sounds good though. Will the throttle be as smooth as with the carbs? I hope so. A snatchy throttle on a bike with the power to weight ratio of an R1 could be hazardous when coming out of a corner. All we have now are some pictures and specs. Yamaha won't let us down.

As far as being the top gun. Forget about those SuziQ's. My friends Gixxer is in the shop more than its on the road. If raw power is all you are after then buy a Boss Hoss. The R1 is a total package that really didn't need much improvement anyway.

Agreed.

We can sit here and blab until we're yamaha blue in the face, but fact of the matter is, all we can comment on is looks. I love the way the new R1 looks. Its the closest anyone has ever come to motorcycle artwork. You have to give the guys at Yamaha some credit.

Everyone knows that the bike has been an ass kicker since its inception, and it will continue to sit at a level that very few motorcycles will ever be at.

Yamaha has not dissapointed in three years, why would the fourth be a let-down?

Honestly, I think its merely human nature that if we can't have something, we have the desire to let everyone else know what's wrong with it....I know I found myself knocking yammmie's when I had a Honda. Views change. Product quality gets better as does technology.

Just my thoughts.
I could be wrong though.

This bike is going to rip. Like my Duc, I don't think I'll ever ride it to its potential.

Its snowing outside right now so all I can do is dream about a '02 R1 and a sunny day with warm pavement. Its going to be a long winter.:rolleyes:
