First time buyer rider here

I'm 24, 6'0 and I have never owned a street bike, only off rode. I just completed my motorcycle safe class and I am very anxious to get a new bike. I have been researching all the 600 super bikes and the Yamaha r6 seems to be at the top of my list. My question(s) are, is this really a good bike for a first time rider? Also should I look at getting a used bike or a new bike. I have some experience and I don’t plan on dropping the damn thing and I would really cringe at getting a used bike some scratch marks, I’m really particular about that stuff. Anyway, I want to know what the advantages/disadvantages to new vs. used. Do the used bike warranties carry over?

It's all about respecting the bike. Taking the time to get used to it. You don't plan on dropping her? Neither did I but it happened. If you believe you would ever wanna stunt, might wanna go used.

i had never ridden a sports bike until the beginning of this year when i bought myself a brand new 03 r6... i'de ridden dirt bikes all the time when i was little tho. i figured that if i'm spend all this money on a bike i'de be better off buying a brand new one & start from scratch.

when i started off i just took my time so i could get used 2 the bike & riding for the first time. if u respect the bike then u'll be fine, i learnt that the hardest thing of all was self control. im 19 and about 5'10 & the bike suits me perfectly!!!

anyways that's just my 2 cents worth, hope it helps

Although this previous post was aimed at a first time rider (new to motorcycling all together) you might find this useful - scroll to the bottom. Also, good job on taking the safety class, it's a great investment.

http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showt...threadid=56570 (again, scroll to bottom)

Hope that provides some valuable feedback.

If you are a first time rider and you want to buy new bike then think about investing in some frame sliders and leathers.

Nothing worse than looking at you beauty of a new bike all scratched up is looking at what is left of your leg cause ya lowsided and got your shoe hooked on the peg and went for a slide.

I am not trying to scare you just use your melon.

And you did the right thing be coming here for advice cause their alot of exeperienced riders on this forum who will gladly give their advice. Don't listen to that fool at the dealership who works in the accessories dept cause all that Sh!Thead is worried about is the sale.(taken from experience myself when I first bought my first street bike)

Ask around dude and do some searches here and you will find all you need

And no one is a retard, people just make mistakes, like les boogie

I never planned to drop any bike I have owned but have written off 2 so does that make me a retard, guess so

Frame sliders are not made to prevent scratches hence the word "frame" sliders.

I have seen many sliders prevent scratching on bikes, depends on the quality of the ones you buy.

I you drop you bike doin 60km/h your frame sliders should take much of the damage and you should get away without much damage, don't wear leathers at that speed and you will be hurting for sometime.

Drop your bike at the double the speed and your bike will sustain damage no matter what and if you are not wearing leathers you will be seriously fu#ked up.

What the point is of what I wrote is that these are some things that are preventive measures you dolt.

What info I can give to help someone starting out I will, now go to bike night and admire your chicken strips over some coffee.

If you can't be productive, then beat it.

Hey! stop the fighting... we are all Bikers here--> peace

if not find a nice road and settle your shit there... hahah

I started out with a 600 and belive me.. buy a used bike... buy one that is already strached up. I crashed that 600 about 5 times, 2 of them major (70mph lowside then 9 days later sideswiped a guy @ 50mph) i sold the bike to my friend and now he uses it to learn. its your first bike but its not gonna be your last bike, dont think like it will be. Go get a jacked up 600 and ride it for... a year (i only rode mine for 6 months b4 i got the R1, but im a stupid teen) then sell it and give someone else the joy of riding, then go buy a nicer bike. Nothing wrong with used bikes, ppl generally care about there bikes more then about themselves (i know when i had my accidents the first thoguht in my mind wasnt "is my body still working") Just look for the telltale signs of a abused bike... if they arnt there then its probablly a alright buy.
New is always pimp but not always practicle

the CBR was my old one... it doesnt look messed up in that picture but believe me it is strached to hell

Not trying to fight bro just trying to make people realize that it is not cool to just talk down on someone for not knowing any better.

That's the same CBR I had for my second bike(very forgiving it was)

Anyway

Have a good one guys I am going to bed.:sleep

I kind of figured that after I took sometime off to think about it.

I just jumped the gun which is bad on my part.

Well, I just upset that cause there is some other bs going around and I got fed up. I have gone back and erased some things I said cause maybe they were a little out of line.
