Electronics Problem...
Not really a computer related problem... But it is an electronics issue and I figured someone might know something about it...
I bought this TV about a year ago... It's a Sony WEGA 36" blah blah blah...
Anyway it's making this REALLY ANNOYING high pitched humming noise. But not at all times. If I turn the volume all the way down or mute it it still does it. Its pissing me off im ready to throw this thing out the window....
Anyone have any ideas?? (being im very poor right now taking it to get it fixed is not really an option at the moment) Thanks...

3 possibilities...
Option 1: Have you debaussed it recently? Tubes can get discolored or perhaps buzzy if your TV is next to any magnetic fields (electic motors, large speakers, etc). The degauss should be in your TV's menu.
Option 2: Do you have the TV in any non-standard aspect ratios? Sometimes putting TVs in the 16:9 or widescreen aspect can cause them to hum or buzz for some reason. Try going back to the standard 4:3 and see if that fixes it.
Option 3: Not good. Could indicate a failing tube. New TV fixes this problem. DON'T OPEN THE TV!!!! The back of the tube retains extremely high voltages even after power is unplugged! We are talking like 10,000 Volts here.

I agree with R1_RX1 on the first 2....but I have opened TV's before to replace fuses and check for damage and no the tubes do no retain voltage....what does retain voltage for some time are the large capacitors...becareful with those, also it's the amperage that kills you not the volts... getting hit with 10000 volts in a very slow manner is not dangerous...getting hit with 1 volt at 1000 amps can fry your brain....
you say it's making a sound...make an attempt if you can to disconnect the spearks from the main board... maybe it's a bad speaker..try one at a time and see if that helps...you may get lucky...
otherwise start the TV with the casing off and listen to see if you can spot where the sound is comming from...if it's the tube, there's probably not to much you can do...though I'm not a TV repair man so don't take my word...
I've have replaced a bad transformer on a TV once and a bad fuse on another...that's all so that's my level of expertise...

Not dissing you viper, but as one of our projects in electronics class we were to bring in a broken item from home to fix. One guy brought in a TV. When he placed the meter leads on the back of the tube, there was a large bang, he went flying back against the wall and his meter was a melted mess.
You are correct in saying voltage doesn't kill you, current does. Less than .5 amps can kill you. If you look at tazers or stun guns they run in the 10-20,000 volt range. It will hurt like heck though!

Ok, I called Circuit City and they put me on the phone will a tech guy. He said that he has encountered this problem before. He said it could be a capacitor or a transformer vibrating that is making the humming noise. What do you guys think of this? Sound reasonable? Would it be safe for me to take the cover off while the TV is on and see if I can hear where its coming from?

i have the Sony 36" Wega XBR.
1.
The thing degausses everytime it starts up. That is why it takes a while to bring the opicture up and when it does, it clicks and comes on immediately.
2. Almost every TV sold has some out odf specs parts to it.
Mine needed to be desperately re-calibrated for the correct colr. Almost always they have to much red in them.
3. They are required by FCC law to accept interference, so if you have a large speaker right next to it, the magnets could be affecting it.
4. The capacitor humming is new to me, but you ever hear a transformer on o power line hum? It's kinda annoying.
5. Did you get the in home warranty? I did, it was the only warranty i've ever purchased and it's worth it for that heavy ass thing.
Good luck.
