It refers to the cross-sectional profile of the main frame spars, beginning with Eddie Lawson's world championship winning YZR500, and 87 FZR1000.

Exup is a servo motor that looks alot like a throttle valve in the exhuast system... helps with low end power.... 3 and 5? are you talking about deltabox? thats just the model or version...first there was deltabox.. then deltabox 2 then 3 then 4 then 5? is the 04 a delta5? i think it is.. just means the version or type or frame... which is a deltabox...

They didn't skip 4, the 04 has the Deltabox V and I've read somewhre that Yamaha used V for Victory and not for the roman number.

As mentioned, the II, III, and V designations connotate different iterations of the deltabox frame.

EXUP is an acronym for Yamaha's EXhaust Ultimate Power valve. This valve is not a sevomotor, and does reside in the exhaust collector. The valve is a butterfly type valve that opens at higher RPM and closes at ower RPM. It is operated by actuator cables connected to the servomotor which is located above the rear of the motor under the tank and controlled by the computer ECM. Whoops, another acronym!
