I'm going to guess that you don't actually have all the screws out. There should be one right in the middle with access through the top of the airbox cover.

You're right there's a screw in the middle !
Squirrels were in my building once before packing a nest and winter supp;ies in the battery tray and tail sections , I put sacks of smooth river rocks in there to curtain the little pest . I would lift the cover from the back periodically to make sure they gave up - they moved their efforts behind the cylinders . They've chewed wires/hoses in half - packed every nook & cranny full of trash/nut hulls/twigs etc. .
Had a roof break away with me causing me to fall 2 years ago nearly killed me broke back/both arms/11 ribs/collarbone ++ . Got bad eyesight now -detached retina , can't afford to fix it .
And couldn't keep a watch on the bike .
Crap squirrels packed on top of airbox rusted out the screw - wet somehow ? Rusted out the screw head - when I felt on it it was smooth so that made me think it couldn't be a screw .
I'll drill it out and use my Easy-Out reverse thread doo-dad .

Thanks a lot for the download and taking the time to help .

I'm an R-1 guy from way back had 85/86' 2 fz-750 , 91'FZR-1000 , this 2000' red R-1 , getting it running and cleaned up to sell the fall I took ended my riding . Maybe .....
