so a few weeks ago i had left for vacation and i put in fuel stabilizer (red) honestly i put more than i should have and left for vacation. when i got back and tried to start it the issue came up... i googled and searched and noticed people had similar issues but not exact symptoms..

lately i have had a much harder time starting my bike it takes a while and some playing with the throttle to get it fired up... today i took a video it took me a while to start and it and it fired 2 huge fireballs and backfired before it finally started..i DO have YES (yamaha extended service) but its sooooo cold i have no way to bring my bike to the dealer right now and i honestly dont trust them unless i absolutely have to (yes i know this may be one of those times) but id like to try to figure it out on my own with the help of you guys...:shake

im thinking possibly the spark plugs fouled from the fuel stabilizer being overfilled. but it dosnt make sense for that to happen from 1 time. then i thought it was the battery :dunno nope got a brand new shorai battery ..:shake

at this point i feel like im in a bitch fight trying to figure out this issue :sissy:..

can anyone help me out and tell me what to diagnose or do to stop this from happening again its mind boggling knowing i did not install any mods nor did i play with my power commander lately... makes no sense to me...

id genuinely appreciate if someone can help from beg to end to fix this issue and i am willing to pay someone to save me a trip to the dealership... i will paypal (1) person (whoever helps most to figure this out) money for your brainstorming and troubles..

thanks for reading my essay guys and if you can PM me :secret: to try and help me from beginning to end... i will pay..

thanks again...:stpd::iamwithst:stpd::iamwithst:iamwithst

thats the plan... but now that this problem arrose i want to figure out whats the matter with it prior to me covering it up.... i usually try to start it at LEAST twice a week during winter and let it run a little bit until all the gas runs out (full tank) this way it keeps all liquids going...

besides we have had some weird weather this year.... one day its 35 degrees F, the next day its 55 degrees.. so its not fully over yet but this is abnormal.. i am posting up videos now.

reversed power commander back to stock... nothing.. reversed back to map both ways still same issue.. bike is tryin to start and turning over but backfiring and shooting fireballs out the exhaust...

so power commander is not the issue... i called the dealership... they said flush the whole fuel tank and start whatever is left let it run out...

they also told me to use 89 or 87 grade fuel... that 93 is watery and is no good for R1 or any bike... is that theory true?? been using 93 in all my bikes... also i have a 08 R1 starts right up no issue.. i put fuel stabilizer in it too... no issue there...

can anyone chime in as to what this can be?

your dealership told you to use 87 grade fuel??? Did you ask WTF the "Do not use under 91" sticker is there for then? You may have just found someone with less skill than you on these bikes. And if 93 is watery, I wonder what thay consider that crap 108 stuff :shake

yes... once if finally shot out 3 fireballs and backfired 5 times it was running just find no issue at all... but the way it starts is abnormal.took like 40 seconds with 5-10 second bursts to get it started... only thing i did different prior to this starting was put in fuel stabilizer to store for winter... and replaced the battery to a shorai battery (top of the line)... i reversed my PC no change... im debating about swaping batteries to see if thats the issue... next would be drain the tank.. after that i really exhausted all options i can think of.

My 09 was a year round ride and I live in the tri State, pretty much ran into a host of problems with it, one of them was in fact cold starting and the fireball out the exhaust. I'm guessing you went to vacation while weather was still fairly mild but returned when the temps dipped, so then suddenly you're having the cold weather starting issues. Have you tried giving it a teeny tiny bit of throttle when you hit the starter? Also the besides the bike itself being a bit of a bear to start in the cold, the Shorai battery also loses some of its cranking ability in the cold only adding to the problem.

you have a good point. my next move it swaping the battery with my 08 to see if that makes any difference in starting.. and yes you got that right on point with the vacation part.. usually the only way to start it is by giving it throttle... i just dont get it .. why isnt my 08 having these problems... i put the same amount of stabilizer in both bikes... only difference is the batteries .. or is it that the 09-12 specifically has a cold start issue?
