Pacman1520's 2017 R1 SuperBike Build

Hello R1 Fanatics!

I've been building my new bike since about February. I figured I should've started a build thread a long time ago but I'm doing it now.

To see my old 2012 R1 Build, click here: https://www.r1-forum.com/forums/224-...-r1-build.html

Now for the good stuff. After buying a Harley in 2015, I ended up shelving my racing. Partly due to injuries not recovering and partly due to being outclassed by the new gen R1's that everyone was getting. I parked the 2012 R1 for two years before finally selling her in April 2017. However, the itch came back and I ended purchasing a brand new 2017 R1 in January 2018. after breaking her in on the streets for a couple thousand miles, I decided it was time for the race bike conversion to begin. I learned a lot by building my last bike and set out to make sure I didn't repeat mistakes such as buying too many "useless" parts. So here we go....

So I bought a new 2017 R1 and immediately started with the basics:

- Vortex Racing Power up kit
- BMC Race Air Filter
- Gold Heat Shielding for the airbox and fuel tank
- Two Brothers S1R exhaust
- FlashTune Bench Side Kit
- Graves smog block off plates

Vortex Racing Power Up Kit (15F-43R)

Stock Air filter

Side by side of the stock and the BMC Race filter

Airbox cover before...

Airbox cover after being wrapped in DEI Gold heat shielding. Not a huge benefit, but it looks cool

Stock exhaust vs Two Brothers exhaust

Stock heavy ass exhaust and cat

All installed cleanly. Saved a ton of weight vs stock and it sounds like a beast!

I contacted my suppliers and got some killer deals on some goodies

- Shorai lithium battery
- GB Racing Engine covers
- Driven captive spacers (more on this later)

Stock lead acid battery vs Shorai lithium battery. The weight savings is huge

Full set of GB Racing engine covers

Vortex steel sprocket with the Driven captive spacers (I ended up switching them with Fast Franks later)

Engine covers installed

Looking better everyday

She was definitely looking mighty fine for a street bike, but I knew why I bought her. She was to be a track weapon. And for that I needed performance parts. So once again I called up Superbike Unlimited for some more parts. (By the way, if you've never dealt with them before and you have an R1, you're missing out). I also hit up my sponsor Vortex Racing for some stuff.

- Zeta Racing clutch perch and folding lever
- Motion Pro Rev2 Throttle
- Domino grips
- Vortex clipons
- Vortex V3 Rearsets
- Vortex Gas Cap

One thing I learned back when I first started racing was that you can't go fast without a way to slow the bike down. So I dedicated a ton of money to the braking system. So once again, SBU to the rescue.

- Brembo 19x18 master cylinder
- Zeta Racing folding brake lever
- HRC rear brake reservoir delete kit
- Zeta Racing remote brake adjuster
- CoreMoto Red brake lines (without ABS)
- FlashTune ABS+ Delete Module

Getting rid of the stock ABS system and the lines started out a little difficult until I realized I was never gonna put the ABS system back on. So instead of removing the metal brake lines the hard way, I just cut em off with diagonal cutters. Easy.

A whole lotta stopping power right here!

Stock ABS pump and hoses still in the bike...

Stock ABS junk outta the bike. More weight loss

Brembo 19x18 master cylinder with Zeta Racing folding brake lever

CoreMoto brake lines of course

Now onto to the fun stuff! I hit up SBU and opened up the flood gates.

- Ohlins steering dampener
- Motoholders intake ducts (fiberglass and carbon)
- Brembo T-Drive front brake rotors
- SBU rear brake rotor
- SEC Composites Carbon Tank Shroud
- Lightech Chain Adjusters
- Driven Racing red pull cups (more on this later)
- Graves 2.0 Bar Radiator Cap

The tank shroud is amazing! On my old bike I would always slide forward under braking, which always threw my BP off for the next corner. This solved that easily. Great buy.

Ohlins dampener arrived

Ended up getting 2 Motoholders intakes. Fiberglass and the full carbon one

Ohlins dampener installed

Carbon intake and Zeta Racing remote brake adjuster

Brembo T-Drive rotors up front, and the MMR lightweight rotor for the rear.

SEC Composites V2 Carbon Tank Shroud. Keeps you planted under heavy braking

Graves 2.0 bar radiator cap

Lightech chain adjusters (first set) and titanium axle nut

I was going to do a track day at Auto Club Speedway to break the bike in for the first time at the track, but my buddy thought it would be good to break her in during an actual race. I agreed and immediately renewed my WERA race license and registered for the July 1st race at Buttonwillow Raceway (a track I'd ever been to before). I needed some fairings first though so I hit up my bro Goldeneye and borrowed his fairings for the race. I also called Chris at CT Racing and got me a nice set of Pirelli slicks for the event. I had sent the wheels out for powder coating a couple of weeks prior and luckily they were finished in time for the race.

It had been awhile since I safety wired a bike for racing so I went through the rulebook with a fine tooth comb to make sure I didn't miss anything. Also took a page out of the pro racer handbook and used heatshrink and safety clips on the parts that were going to be constantly removed, ie axles, calipers, etc.

Here's some pics of her during tear down and after she's all dressed up for the party....

I ended up grabbing two 2nd place finishes that day. They were basically participation trophies cuz there were only two of us racing in those classes lol. But hey, it still felt good to finish after 3 years away from racing.

Outstanding safety wire if I can say so myself

After that first race, I knew I had some things to work on. I wasn't comfortable at all pushing the bike in the corners and taking the ecu out to adjust things got tedious. So I hit up SBU for some electronic and suspension goodies and sent the bike off to GP Suspension to have the master, Fuzzy set her up. I then prepped her for my next race which was at Auto Club Speedway. I was looking forward to this one as its my home track and I have more miles there than anywhere else.

- Ohlins TTX rear shock sprung for my weight
- GP Suspension cartridges
- FlashTune Bike Side Harness
- FlashTune Auto-Blipper
- FlashTune Active Tune

I'm a huge fan of FlashTune obviously. I remember when Chris Gardell first flashed my 2012 R1 back in 2012 when he was working out of a small shop in LA. Now his electronics are on 90% of the bikes in the paddock and in MotoAmerica.

FlashTune bike side harness was pretty easy to install

Some more tuning (seems like it never stops)

Alas, my long awaited return to Fontana was not to be. After struggling with the auto blipper and launch control in practice, i was only able to get a few laps in. I wasn't mentally prepared and went out for race one not feeling great. To top it off, I had a lot of friends, family, and coworkers there to see me so the pressure was on to do well. After doing the warm up lap, I felt a little better. But once the green flag dropped, I must've made a mistake with the launch control because the bike went 12 o'clock, stalled out, and then fell over. I broke some hard parts and was unable to finish the rest of my races so my day was over.

On the way home, I immediately began ordering replacement parts for the stuff that broke. I even ordered extras just in case it happens again. Here's some photos from race day.

My brothers came to watch me race

Broken clipon and footpeg after "the incident" lol

Smh. No words needed

Later on that week, some long awaited goodies arrived from SBU. Now some may say that some of these parts are overkill. But I don't care. They're cool as hell!!

- BSD Button Pods left and right sides (plug and play)
- Extra Vortex Rear sprockets
- Fast Franks Front Wheel Quick Change Kit
- Fast Franks Real Wheel Quick Change Kit with Lightech adjusters
- Fast Franks Chain Tab
- Fast Franks Captive wheel spacers ***
- Lacomoto Carbon Fiber Swingarm Covers
- FlashTune Race Team Subscription
- Zeta Racing Brake lever guard

***I ended up replacing the original Driven captive spacers because their design allowed them to keep falling out every tie I went to put the wheel on.

And the Quick Change Kit was a great addition to the bike as it makes wheel changes a breeze! A piece of advice: safety wire the inner brake pad to the caliper to prevent it from falling out when trying to put the wheel back on. Also use a 2x4 block to sit the rear wheel on when reinstalling it. puts the axle hole right at the correct height for you to just roll it on in.

***A point of note for the FlashTune Race Team Package. There is only one track map for the 2017+ R1's. The rest of the maps are for the 2015-16 models which kinda sucks for how much it costs. If you have a 2015-16 model though, I highly suggest you look into it. There are so many more changes that the race teams did that you can have at your fingertips!

BSD button pods from Superbike Unlimited installed

Really cleans up the cockpit well

Different sprockets to test out for Vegas

A whole lotta $$$ for some Fast Frank goodies!

Captive rear bracket and modified Lightech adjusters

Left side looks even cooler

Quick change kit up front too

Replaced the generic brake lever guard with a new Zeta Racing one

Carbon fiber swingarm covers to complete the look

More tuning with the new FlashTune Race Team Package

Something I forgot to mention when writing all this is how much I LOVE ProBolt!!! I can't even count how many titanium race spec fasteners are on this thing! Basically everything that needs to be safety wired, plus a bunch of other bolts I replaced just because I could lol

Looking good, and going fast no doubt.
You and I have some similar builds going.
Building really is half the fun though.

Came to work to find a replacement Zeta Clutch lever and a new Ohlins rear spring waiting for me from Superbike Unlimited. The lever will be going on today so I can ride the race bike to the Pirelli Moto Mixer at Pirelli P-Zero World in Los Angeles tomorrow

A couple more parts arrived yesterday and today. New radiator and oil cooler guards, some aluminum hex head bolts for the airbox from Probolt, and a very cool Speedcell Key Delete Switch that I got from Superbike Unlimited. So I got to work installing everything
