Rossi was up there in terms of endorsements salary likely because his popularity is unrivaled in the relatively small sport of Motorcycle racing. However his salary is comparatively small when measured against that of similarly ranked F1 Drivers. For example The highest paid F1 driver that year made $29 mil. Fast forward to 2016 where Hamilton made $42 mil just in salary and I doubt the highest paid Motogp rider cracked $20 mil. F1 also receives much higher viewership and better TV broadcast times. Like MM stated, it's much easier to find a completely random person who isn't much into to sports and I'd bet money they've likely heard of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Louis Hamilton, or Michael Schumacher. But haven't a clue who Valentino Rossi is or what he does.

My wife is from Europe, She's been in the U.S. full time for about 6 years now. Before that she traveled heavily as a model all over Europe and Asia. She has a ton of good friends who live all over the world, not to mention her family which still lives in Ukraine and Turkey. Since this debate about Rossi's popularity started a couple weeks ago I've been asking her to ask her friends and fam if they know who Rossi and a few popular Drivers are. Across the board almost none of them have any idea who Rossi is, but nearly everyone of them has heard of Schumacher, or Hamilton. Furthermore, I work in the Entertainment industry and frequently cross paths with people who live/work/travel internationally, and I've got just about the same results.
Well said, and 100% correct. 6 years after his retirement and I guarantee more people know of Schumacher than Rossi.

Rossi is the biggest name in MotoGP. But he's far from the biggest in motorsport.

Finally woohoo!!!

I reckon Ducati’s are gonna be strong at Qatar and watch Zarco to take the lead again as he did last year.

Let’s see what the factory Yamaha’s can do...

Gonna be a great season!!!

I'm glad he's sticking around. It's gonna make for great racing and there's no chance of him winning the title. It's a win/win

The caveat is FP1, and FP3 will both be run in daylight so these two sessions are largely irrelevant. FP2, FP4, Q1/Q2, and the race all run at night in cooler conditions. Rossi was running the hard front in FP1, and he probably won't use it in FP2. The night sessions will tell us who is fast. FP1 and FP3 are open trackdays.
