  1. Overheated and Died?

    Yamaha YZF-R1 - R1M General Discussion
Something weird has happened to the coolant. Get a sample of that and get the bike straight to the dealer. Don't ride it again. I would expect the coolant from the factory to be OAT and not contain silicate.
  2. Suspension set up

    02-03 Performance Group
I've found their settings to be a good starting point for my last 2 bikes. Unfortunately the intro to the table seems to have gone, but at least the numbers are there. The setting that refers to lines showing is the preload. Fork tube height is how far the end of the tube is above the top...
  3. Suspension set up

Some bar movement is normal, depending on the bike. It could help to get the suspension checked and set up properly if there is someone local. If you just want to try a different setup, I was going to suggest the Sport Rider website. However, looks like they are part of Cycle World now...

What do mean by a steering wobble? Are you getting some movement of the bars, or is it a full on tankslapper? I'd expect your model could be OK without a steering damper, but there are so many variables.
  5. What's the name of the part that connects the stator and the rectifier?

    New Member Introductions
They are connected through the wiring loom. What exactly needs replacing?
  6. Need a new rectifier what's the best brand for my 2000 r1

    New Member Introductions
I would suggest upgrading to a MOSFET reg/rec. The Shindengen FH020AA is the one to get, which was fitted as standard to later models (09-14). It should be a direct replacement on the 2000 R1. I have one in my 99 and its been great. Be careful if you buy on eBay as it is full of cheap Chinese...

  8. Clutch won't disengage

    02-03 R1 Mechanical Help
I would suggest OEM. Not sure what you're paying for the EBC kit, but the plates and spring from Partzilla are $192. You could probably find them cheaper if you look around. Unfortunately Yamaha do not sell a kit for your bike. The other issue is the clutch damper - this is shown as part of...
  9. Front sprocket removal tips

    15-19 R1 Mechanical Help
Looks like a self locking nut. An impact gun should loosen it, but don't try and spin the nut off.
  10. Front sprocket removal tips

    15-19 R1 Mechanical Help
You should be OK with a 6 point, preferably an impact socket but they are expensive. A decent quality 6 point has always worked for me. That nut can be sooo tight from the factory.

Impact wrench. The reason locking the wheel doesn't work is the sprocket cush drive.

    02-03 R1 Mechanical Help
Someone on another forum recently had the same problem. A new clutch fixed it.
  14. Cornering / Tires?

    Tire Tech Forum
I changed from the Q3 to the Metzler M7RR a couple of years ago. I've found it to be better for street riding with excellent grip on most surfaces and conditions, and a progressive feel when it does start to slide. But what you might like is it's easier to ride at high lean angles than the Q3...
  15. 99R1 questions?

    98-99 R1 Mechanical Help
Pleased to hear you've fixed it. If you're planning to keep the bike for a while, a MOSFET reg is a good upgrade. But hopefully the one you've fitted will be OK, especially if you move it where there's more airflow The 2000 R6 mirrors are different. But they will probably bolt on OK, although...
  16. 99R1 questions?

    98-99 R1 Mechanical Help
The reg/rec on my 99 wasn't charging properly when I bought the bike 5 years ago. I bought a kit with a MOSFET reg/rec and wiring with new connectors, and it's been fine ever since. 14.4V across the battery just off idle, and the MOSFET reg/rec barely gets warm. Totally agree about...
  17. anyone using r1 2015 + front brake master cylinder on 98-01 r1?

    98-99 R1 Mechanical Help
I expected to have problems with kitting the mc on my bike as it has done 65,000 miles, but it was fine. I did look at buying a radial, and have also read that the 04-08 will fit. But I don't know about the latest R1 sorry.
  18. Cooling fan

    98-99 R1 Mechanical Help
Early R1 cylinders can develop cracks. Running at 220 plus may or may not have anything to do with this, but it certainly can't hurt to drop the temperature 20 degrees.

    Isn't the factory warranty transferable?
  20. 99R1 questions?

    98-99 R1 Mechanical Help
The voltages and resistances look fine. Are you buying a new regulator? Some of the aftermarket parts from China are rubbish. If the battery charges normally on a charger and starts the engine, it should be OK.
