Does anyone have any comment for me on the sound of the 2002 R1?

I got my bike Thursday. The motor and transmission sound different from any other sport bike that I have ridden or owned...previously on Suzuki's and Honda's for the last 15 years.

The motor has a sort of shuffle or almost vacuum sound and at speed the tranny sounds like it is whirring - almost like a helicopter...

Am I hearing things or is that the way the new R1 sounds or do I need to go to the dealership!!!!

Also it is not shifting as smoothly as I expected...sort of rachety and takes extra effort to get it into 6th gear...will this smooth out or is it something the dealership should deal with?

Thanks for any comments...love the R1 by the way...

Mine is pretty quiet.. Almost sounds like a "turbo" type whistle at certain speeds... No problem at all with the shifting, in fact when I put into first for the first time I had to check the light to make sure I wasn't still in Neutral, didn't make a sound, or feel the chain grab like I'm used to... Very smooth

bitchin intake whine huh???!!!

It is supposed to sound that way. I think I'm especially cognizant of it on roll ons from about 25 miles an hour and up - anything on the highway becomes drowned out a bit by wind noise and exhuast....though I suspect it will all go away once the devil pipe is on - that I can just here the sweet exhuast note....I will miss that intake whine though - it sounds bitchin when you spin up that engine...WHHIIIRRRRRRRROOOOOAAAAAARRRR...fucking awesome machine.

as for the shifting, I noticed mine has gotten alot better after 560 miles - it was notchy for the first 400 or so - ESPECIALLY neutral to first or first to second...and also especially when you're in neutral and you gas it a bit and shift into first without leting it come back to idle...it pings into gear pretty loud. once you get past 500-600 change you oil and than go ride - I noticed and immediate difference - it didn't "PROING" into gear like at first. it's all about wear-in...in fact if you notice I posted last week about nueral chain grab that was ALOT on the swingarm stand...guess what - after 560 miles, even BEFORE the iol change up on the stand the wheel hardly moved at all - it is breaking in beautifully.

I like that noise!

I hear that same turbine-like noise on roll-ons... nice!!! I think i'll even wait one year before changing the stock pipe just to apreciate that noise, besides it's better for the warrenty to leave it stock. I must admit that gearchanges from 1st to 2nd allways make a big CLUNK (that makes me allways use the clutch for that one), but all others are silk smooth. Even the initial BUZZ i could feel in the handlebars at at first (5000 RPMs) seems to be going away with miles. :)

Scud:

If first gear was engaging with a CLUNK maybe the dealer put thicker oil (like 20W50 causing the clutch to grip a little while pulled in) and/or maybe it was just doing that on the first miles in cold weather. It would explain the big difference between oil changes.
