Does anyone know how big the steering stem nut is on an '02 R1. I have a 30mm socket, but it's much too small. My guesstimate is 33mm. Can anyone confirm? I am expecting the mounting bracket for my Scotts damper today. Can anyone also confirm that the steering stem nut has to be removed on the R1 to install the Scotts mounting bracket?

The steering head nut it 36mm. I just went to the autoparts store and picked up a socket for about $7. You have to remove the original steering stem nut and washer that is under the nut. The Scott's kit supplies a new nut that need to be torqued to 85 ft-lbs. Do not use the original washer under the new nut. It will make the nut sit up too high from the triple clamp.

I just put mine on this past weekend so if you have anymore questions, fire them away.:machinegu

The only thing that I did differently was that I put little hard rubber spacers under the outer support pads of the bracket that bolts to the frame. The outer support pads were supposed to be within .030" from the frame. Mine were more than .030" and the gap was not even from the front to the back of the support pad. I added .125" hard rubber and it seems to work well.
