I was a huge fan of the flat black paneling on the silver '02-03 R1, and was initially a bit overwhelmed by the amount of silver on the '04. After a lot of thought, I ordered the silver (due to arrive in April – I almost went with red).

The red comes with a flat black lower panel, and I got curious (which led to photoshopping). The swap to black on a silver bike would be a no-brainer, and I like the look. However, I'm still not sure I'll do it when mine arrives.

The darker silver panel has lines that carry smoothly into the tail, but the black blends so nicely with the frame...

That silver/red job looks great with the silver wheels.

I like the black on silver idea because the black would be available to just bolt-on – no need for custom painting (and nothing against it, either).
