I know it's the same as the 02/03. I have one lying around with Yamaha part # 3FV-13440-00. Is that the right one?
I believe this one will work, but if memeory serves, it is the one for older Yamaha sportbikes. The only difference is it is slightly shorter (1/4" or so)Greg Crowe said:I know it's the same as the 02/03. I have one lying around with Yamaha part # 3FV-13440-00. Is that the right one?

From what I've read/know then that's about the only thing that is.

be able to fit between the filter and exhaust.

Yup, the '04 R1 oil filter is a bitch to change. Less room than all the other years.R1LOVER said::iamwithst
But I didn't want to make a mess on my new baby... I used a very small strap type oil filter wrench... it was still a b!tch.....
I am just trying to give you the heads up...I was a parts manager for yamaha for about 2 years. I asked a yamaha tech the same question about why the 3fv was the exact same size. He told me that they are design for the roadstars to help keep up oil pressure in the bike. They were having problems with them wanting to dry sump so they had to have a filter that would flow less oil through it to help keep oil pressure high. You may not have a single problem ever from running that filter, but like nitrous one person may run it forever with no problems and the next person blow there motor the first time with the same size shot. Its a calculated rick and all I am saying is that me nor YAMAHA would reccomend you running that filter on your bike.Greg Crowe said:My 98 has survived 6 long years of 150+ dyno runs, drag racing, and Hayabusa top speed racing abuse while using the 3FV so I'm not too worried. Physically the 3FV looks identical to the 5FV(same height). It will only be on for a few hundred more break-in miles so I'm not too worried.
according to the yamaha parts catalog the 5gh is the proper filter..I think when it first came out they were shipped with a 3fv but there was a statement released that told dea;ers to change to 5gh on first serviceEyespy said:What is the part # for the 00/01 oil filter?

you know as I was reading your last poat that got me thinking. My 00 I know came with a 3fv..hmmm I guess when they released the service bulletin about it they also changed the part numbers. I think what yamaha did was they had the 3fv available which they had used on the bikes including the roadstar. Maybe when they upped the output on the 00+ models they realized they had problem with oil flow. So to solve the problem they created a less restrictive filter of the exact measurments. The only thing that might be a problem with converting a 99 model to the 5GH that I can think of.... There may be a problem with oil pressure like the roadstar would have if you changed it over. I would assume it would work fine, but if those particular models need that little bit of backpressure to kepp oil pressure high then it would have bad effects. I will look into it more now that you've got me curious...LOLGreg Crowe said:Venomous/Travis, What is your feeling about using the 5GH on the 98-99 models? If it's a better filter, which I'm not doubting, I'm curious why Yamaha hasn't superceeded the part numbers.
Ahhhh. but what do you use on your FZR??????????Eyespy said:5GH-13440-00-00 for the 00. Thanks, that was my understanding, too, and what I've been using.
