I know it's the same as the 02/03. I have one lying around with Yamaha part # 3FV-13440-00. Is that the right one?
I believe this one will work, but if memeory serves, it is the one for older Yamaha sportbikes. The only difference is it is slightly shorter (1/4" or so)

But then again i could be totally wrong and just gettin old.....:lol

The 5GH is the one that you want...My friend and I just changed my oil today....The tricky part is using a torque wrench on the filter...unless you have a very small torque wrench, you won't be able to fit between the filter and exhaust.

the 3fv isnt the right filter do not use it at all....The 5gh flows more oil than the 3fv and you take a chance of oil starvation and dropping oil pressure using the 3fv. They use the 3fv on the roadstars for various reasons. Go buy a 5GH and do it right or you will have problems.

My 98 has survived 6 long years of 150+ dyno runs, drag racing, and Hayabusa top speed racing abuse while using the 3FV so I'm not too worried. Physically the 3FV looks identical to the 5FV(same height). It will only be on for a few hundred more break-in miles so I'm not too worried.

As far as changing the filter, it's very easy. Just use a correct motorcycle oil filter wrench/hat thingy(don't know what to call it). You can't get a wratchet extension in there to snap into the wrench but you can easily use a 17mm wrench to grab the oil filter wrench/hat thingy. Pretty convenient considering the drain plug was 17mm too.

I am just trying to give you the heads up...I was a parts manager for yamaha for about 2 years. I asked a yamaha tech the same question about why the 3fv was the exact same size. He told me that they are design for the roadstars to help keep up oil pressure in the bike. They were having problems with them wanting to dry sump so they had to have a filter that would flow less oil through it to help keep oil pressure high. You may not have a single problem ever from running that filter, but like nitrous one person may run it forever with no problems and the next person blow there motor the first time with the same size shot. Its a calculated rick and all I am saying is that me nor YAMAHA would reccomend you running that filter on your bike.

What is the part # for the 00/01 oil filter?
according to the yamaha parts catalog the 5gh is the proper filter..I think when it first came out they were shipped with a 3fv but there was a statement released that told dea;ers to change to 5gh on first service

5GH-13440-00-00

The 3FV-13440-00-00 came stock on 98's and 99's. I just searched the Yamaha parts finder and found that the 3FV-13440-00-00 is still listed as the current filter for the 98's and 99's with the 5GH listed for the 00-03.

Venomous/Travis, What is your feeling about using the 5GH on the 98-99 models? If it's a better filter, which I'm not doubting, I'm curious why Yamaha hasn't superceeded the part numbers.
you know as I was reading your last poat that got me thinking. My 00 I know came with a 3fv..hmmm I guess when they released the service bulletin about it they also changed the part numbers. I think what yamaha did was they had the 3fv available which they had used on the bikes including the roadstar. Maybe when they upped the output on the 00+ models they realized they had problem with oil flow. So to solve the problem they created a less restrictive filter of the exact measurments. The only thing that might be a problem with converting a 99 model to the 5GH that I can think of.... There may be a problem with oil pressure like the roadstar would have if you changed it over. I would assume it would work fine, but if those particular models need that little bit of backpressure to kepp oil pressure high then it would have bad effects. I will look into it more now that you've got me curious...LOL

5GH-13440-00-00 for the 00. Thanks, that was my understanding, too, and what I've been using.
Ahhhh. but what do you use on your FZR??????????
Nevermind, yours has the cartridge type doesn't it.

but all other FZR's of all years take the 3FV if i'm not mistaken.
(if they have spin on filters that is :lol)
