Hi guys
I don´t know if this has been covered before to the extend I´m looking for but here it goes:

I´m into buying a 04 R1 but my question to the owners especially the ones with aftermarket exhaust is how hot it really gets?
I live in Portugal and summers get really hot around here (35Cº) and I don´t like the idea of burning my ass off like I did for example on the duc999s I test drove the other day.

Also if for some chance I give a ride to a friend (girl) how bearable is it going to get. Can a person handel it or is it going to be almost impossible.

This issue is very important for me so all input regarding this will be much appreciated. :thumbup

Don't know from experienc, but from what I have read it seems the heat comes from the cat. If you aftermarket slipon that does away with the cat it should help substantially. :dunno

The heat from/under the seat is not bad at all. the heat comes from the pipes that run around the ankle and thigh. An after market exhauset would proly help not worsten the problem. Go with carbon fiber, it does no heat at all.

It doesn't really matter what kind of exhaust you have. Low ground speed is going to heat up the seats no matter what you do. The heat goes up when you stop in traffic, your ass happens to be right above it. Any bike with an undertail exhaust is going to get hot. So if you are going to give the lady a ride take her on the highway or twisties. Thats where it belongs anyway!

It does get hot (when stopped and in traffic) and it's only 72 degrees right now. I'm wondering what will happen in the Summer?

The '04 is appreciably hotter than previous years. I think you will see a lot on this as summer gets here. Even at 60 here in FL I found myself having to put my knees out once in a while to catch some cool air. AdHoc airflow. However that (and the high gearing - already resolved with 16T) is the ONLY complaint I have and I am going to put carbon cans on and take out the Cat to help resolve the heat issue. My bet is some enterprising soul will come out with some carbon heat guards anyway. Go for the R1

I removed the cat from my stock exhaust after my legs got toasted during a 90 deg F. day. Without the cat there is MUCH less heat on the back of the legs. No sound or power difference I can tell, but the heat is reduced a lot. Still seems a bit warmer than my 02 R1 with the side exit exhaust but not too much more...

There is a slight sound difference. Approx. 1.5-2 decibels. It sounds deeper.

I just test drove the new one 4hours ago. And the bike is everything people say about it. So I won´t get into that it is a 1A bike.
Now, concerning the heat issue, today was a very warm spring day here in Portugal añd after 15 minutes of spirited driving and returning back to traffic it does get a bit hot, still ok for the driver but for someone who sits in the back it gets really too f...in hot and in the peak of summer the lady I took with me says it will probably become nearly unbearable depending on the ability of sacrifice. Carbon cans must get on if I decide to dump my 02 and move on to the new one. And definitely loose the cat.

Ok, here my 2c:
The maximum ambient temperature I have ridden it is 20°C however, keep this in mind.
First of all, I don't experience a heat issue from the exhaust itself and am asking myself a bit what others are talking about. The passenger seat doesn't get warm at all and the plastic in the compartment below the passenger seat gets hand-warm at best.
As for the rider, I did in fact notice considerably more heat from the frame/motor than with the 02 R1, specially in the knee area. But this is from engine/frame and not from the exhaust. I didn't notice any significant seat heating as well. This may be due to the relative low temperatures and may change in summer, but by no means it is or will be a problem! If there is seat heating, it again is rather caused by metal parts of the frame under it than by the exhaust.
I was in town for the last two days, lots of stop and go, with the motor at max temperature and the fan on. I didn't notice considerable radiation from the cat (and I checked for that with the bare hand). If the bike is idling, the cat is rather cold anyway. This may be different if you stop from some fast riding and stay on the bike for a moment.
On the right side of the bike, there is a radiation shield to protect the rider from heat radiation. This shield is made from thermoplastic and gets hand-warm. Also the rear shock that is quite close to the cat doesn't get really hot.

Like with any bike, if it is 30°C+, you should be rolling or it is getting hot! Remember, there is a 70kg block between your legs that is at 100°C!
If you are rolling, the only heat you will feel is the frame, where your legs touch it. With thin pants this may get uncomfortable and additional shielding (carbon covers) may be helpfull.

You don't feel anything of the cat or exhaust however. This is specially true in riding position, your legs are just out of the way of any radiation!
By the way, the inside of the legs on my leathers is black, I should feel if there was radiation heat!
I am currently trying to get an infrared cam to do some heat map pictures of the bike and end all speculations.

I would be astonished to see Yamaha put a heat shield only on one side if there was a real problem. Remember, this is a tiny kat!
Should I experience heat problems caused by the exhaust in summer, I'll just shield the cat some more and add a little fan to blow its heat away, but I currently doub't I'll have to do anything at all there.

You live in germany I know the place very well since I was born there. But today we had almost 28 degrees celsius and in fact as I said earlier, after 15 min spirited driving and getting back into traffic with stop and go (hitting 105Cº on the display) it gets really too hot for the passenger not the driver. The driver will for the most part be OK, put I´m really focusing on the passenger and if you think it doesn´t get hot for him or her than you should try it. It does get very uncomfortable and hot. And I would think that in summer where we get 35 to 40 degrees it sure will suck. It will be ok if you drive over 50km/h but lower than that and stopped after a longer drive... well I don't know?
Of course the one is a bike for one driver only but for me I do a lot of two up so the issue is important.:thumbup

As long as you are moving - it's barely noticeable. If you get stuck at a red-light for any length of time - it becomes a nut roaster pretty quick.
You start looking forward to dropping the clutch when the light turns green.

I didn't notice this at 20°C but it may be different at 28°...
After all, riding such a bike in town at high ambient temperature sucks allways, regardless where the exhaust sits.
But riding on the backseat of an R1 sucks even at cold temperatures
