Hey guys, I have a 2007 yamaha r1 and lately I've been experiencing some weird idling problems. When I'm stopped at a light idling my rpm will drop really low and sometimes even drop so low that my bike will shut off, and sometimes when I'm riding and i pull in my clutch my bike will even shut...
That flashtune nightmare buddy of mine couldn't figure out what the hell was causing his lumpy idle/stalling after he had his rectifier replaced. Dealership did all they could and the mechanic there, god bless his soul, suggested it was the O2. We disabled it and the symptoms disappeared. He did lose all of his autotune features for it, but the map that came with his exhaust is solid enough on its own that autotune probably wasn't necessary in the first place.
It's pretty straightforward if you follow the manual. It goes, step by step.
The steps I use are,
1) remove engine
2) remove timing cover and valve train cover
3) bring engine to tdc on cylinder 1 (far left back to front) and look at the timing marks to determine stroke. To insure tdc on compression stroke, line up the marks.
4) check the valve clearance on cylinder one.
5) rotate the crank and check valve clearance on the other cylinders in order.
6) record measurements.
7) remove cam chain tensioner.
8) remove cam sprockets.
9) remove cam caps and cams.
10) remove buckets and measure shims.
11) calculate size and replace shims.
12) reinstall everything in reverse order and verify timing
13) verify measurements
14) reinstall everything and the motor.
Done.
I can't say enough good things about the description of the procedure in the manual.
A lot of guys mess up valves and valve timing. I know of several guys who took their bikes apart to do valves and never got it back together. If you are unsure at all about it then just get a shop to do it.
