2000 R1 fluctuating idle and not running smooth?

Hi,

A few months ago I bought a R1 (2000). Since last week I have noticed that the idle speed is fluctuating during cold start, but also when the engine is at operating temp. Fluctuations are somewhere between the 1000 rpm +/- 100/200 rpm.

Also, when riding the bike, it is not running smoothly. Gas response seems not to be 'lineair'. A small input sometimes results in high rpm's.

The following items have been performed/checked:

  • oil and oil filter replaced
  • Spark plugs replaced
  • air filter replaced
  • Carbs. Ultrasonic cleaned.
  • fuel filter replaced.

Video of fluctuating idle:

Does anyone have an idea what could be the root cause?

It looks like it’s out of fuel? What’s it like with a tank full? Those issues are usually carbs but you say you’ve done that.

Thank you for your reply. I forgot to mention that it also has this problem with a full tank. The fuel light came on one km before I got home.
I had similar issues when the carbs were not seated properly on the inlet stubs. To prove the point, as I’d stripped and cleaned/blew them out and that didn’t work- I bought a 2nd hand bank of 4 and they are still on the bike! This was about 3 years ago. I never really got those original carbs working. I’ve owned the bike from new so I know what it’s had done to it and that takes the guesswork out of it. Did you rebuild the carbs yourself? If you did then you know how difficult it is the seat and tighten the carbs on the bike!

I have to ask...Did you remove every jet and clean them with carb cleaner or did you just dip the whole carb bank in and ultrasonic?
