I wanted to let you know what happened to me today. I was pulling the wheel up and the right clip-on busted off. :no Not only did I almost go down but it scared the $hit out of me  Any way when I cleaned out my pants I noticed the screws on the other clip-on were loose. I called my dealer and he told me I was the THIRD R1 sold that had this problem. If you do not want to down that new baby of yours you may want to check.:fact

This is the dealer's fault. One of the limited assembly steps the dealer must take when they uncrate a new 2002 R1 and prep it for delivery is to rotate the right clip-on into position and tighten the bolts that secure it. The dealer screwed up, and this is a common problem that is occurring with significant frequency.

I noticed this the first day I brought my bike home. Before I even rode it, one bolt was in hand tight, the other was about 3 or 4 turns in. Would have fallen out the first ride if I didn't check it. Figured it was just me, but looks like it's not.

I have 178 miles on my new bike. They are replacing the part and of course the dealer told me it was the factory that did not tighten them.:bs Does anyone know where the responsibility lies for certain?

Yes, I know that the answer I gave you is for certain. It's a dealer screw up, plain and simple.

I had the same problem. When I heard about it, I thought I better check mine out. Holy crapp, both bolts on my right clip on were missing!!! God know's how long I was riding like that. Took it to the dealer and they replaced them and also used lock tight. :rock

The correct procedure is to rotate the right clip-on into position, use blue loctite on both pinch bolts, and torque down to factory spec.

If you are asking what a clip on is. It is the handle bar on the right and left side. They connect to the fork tube just is under the triple tree. It is call a triple tree because it connects three things: The frame and both fork tubes. The problem alot of people are having is, the two pinch screws just under the tree are loose. Eyespy says and I believe him that these are not in place from the factory. I am taking a guess and eyespy can correct me if I am wrong but I think the left side comes torqued down. I looked at mine and they are blue marked. I would assume that the dealers are straitening the right clip on and putting in the bolt on the top of the tree. They then assume Yamaha sent them tow extra screws for the hell of it.:crash They are experts you know:bs Anyway if this was to simple of an explanation or you were not asking the question and wanted to see a pics of a handle bar sorry for wasteing your time.:hellobye P.S I made alot of assumptions "when you make an assumption you make an ass out of u and umption" Samuel L Jackson Long Kiss Goodnight

clip on

yeah, if someone can take a pic of the clip on, it will be very helpful. I am just now learning how to work on bikes (do some minor work of course:D ) and is very concern about this clip on thing that everyone is having trouble with.

check more than just clip-ons

a little off year but my 2001 had a loose stering head bolt, bar-ends,engine mount bolts(both bolts on both sides in the head)the one screw at the top of the tank
that holds it down.
not mention the usaul mirrors nuts falling off.
now not all of these are part of dealer prep i know, but some are and the ones that are should have been
blue locktighted but they were not and the dealer i purchased from said they do not put their own bikes together.they said a company in the next state that just puts bikes together does it for them and could not
do anything about it. oh well just thought i would let everyone know and im going to check my clipons now.

my right side clip-ons were loose, and it's definitely a dealer issue--they apologized for it. also my steering head bolt was loose...I could feel a tiny bit of movement during the transition from throttle to brake. dealer said that wasn't their fault. oh, and my rear tire was inflated to 48 psi, fortunately only for the first ride home from the dealer though.

lesson learned: don't trust dealers, check everything yourself.
