2004 R1 Suspension Settings

Ok guys, I see where a lot of riders have put initial miles on their new babies, but has anyone tweaked with their suspension settings yet? I own a blue '04 and adjusted mine from the get go. I only weigh 132 lbs...(save the laughs, please) and was curious if anyone had a "dialed in" setting to go by yet. I initially thought the factory settings were way too stiff for my preferences...any others??

Just start at mid point on the adjustments and go from there. Remember to adjust one at a time, i.e. rebound on front then ride. Then adjust the compression on front, then ride. You get the idea.

And don't forget to adjust your preload first before tweaking with the rebound and compression adjustments.
The first thing you should do is set your front and rear sag. If I had a nice new shiny 04 thats what I would do! Have fun.
Most of the "lighter" owners of the 04 R1 will find the stock settings with the OEM standard springs are alittle too stiff.

For once YAMAHA put a fairly decent OEM suspension on the R1 that even heavier riders can adjust for high performance riding.

The original 1998 was too soft, the 02 was loads better and workable, the 2004 is just about right on.

I weight about 230 lbs. what should my setting be ?
anyone with same weight could suggest ?
I know I should test it set it test it set it etc etc...
But sometimes we want suggestions :)
echo, your avatar is creepy dude.
at 230 pounds, you'll need new springs to do it right. either that or you'll need to slim down towards 200lbs at the most! :D
there is no "one setting" not only does the suspension setup differ due to rider weight, but you have to figure in style and personal pref.

the better question to ask is, how to set your sag, and the procedure to go through to find what settings work for YOU.

Current springs can be adjusted to your liking but will take testing to figure out.

If you cannot get somebody to help u with sag settings just look at the manual, set the bike up to the "standard" setting and go riding on your favorite twisty road. See how the bike feels to you and make SMALL adjustments one at a time.

Make the adjustment, ride, then monitor your feedback....ie, felt good u liked it, did not feel good ..etc.

If you're not good at it be all means used a little notebook to write down the settings, what adjustments u like or do not like and so forth.

If u'r gonna "eyeball" it, I'd say based upon your weight u may have to increase rear pre-load 1 or 2 settings to the "harder" side then ride and fine tune it in.

Also u'r riding style dictates how the suspension will be set. I use very little brakes so my settings may not work well for u.

All in all the stock settings are "very stiff" for 160lb riders....this is a plus for the heavier guys. Ride, see how it feels, write down pluses or minuses, make small adjustments and re-ride the same route. Pretty soon u'll have it dialed in how u like. It just takes alittle time.
