I installed a new battery today and after connecting the terminals and putting the plastic cover back over the battery I smelled something burning. I quickly realized my terminals were melting the plastic cover the holds the battery down.

After some investigation I determined the plastic piece itself is conductive and was shorting the battery directly across the terminals. I realize there is a fiber cover that wraps around the battery that should have prevented this, but when putting that plastic piece on this tends to move off the top of the battery toward the front of the bike.

Has anyone else ran into this problem? Why would they use a conductive plastic across the top of the battery?

Any ideas on how to prevent this other than to make sure the fiber cover completely covers the battery? I also thought about cutting the plastic piece where it overlaps the +terminal, but I'm not sure if that would introduce any other problems.

Hopefully someone else will read this before having the same issue and potentially suffer a lot more damage.
