Anyone know what Yamaha is recommending on breaking this monster in?

There is no proof that any type of break-in produces a specific horsepower. That's all rumor mill.

The only fact is Yamaha has specifically printed a recommended method to break in a motor and any other variation of what they outlined is solely personal preference.

I call it nonsense ;)
So basically what you're saying is that a modern engine with tight clearances (...a superbike's engine), using synthetic or conventional oil doesn't really matter?

Tighter tolerances need synthetics higher load capacities over conventional oils to tight and convention breaks down overheats and fails where synthetics can be pushed farther is what I was saying except when run in certain situations with flat tappet cams then conventional oil becomes a must to save the cam so then you must open/match the bearing tolerances for the conventional oil
And in a high performance engine like a superbike Id run synthetics.. Basically a race bike tamed for the street

I'll actually drain, and fill with Rotella (diesel oil) for the first couple oil changes

I'm no chemist nor "professional" engine builder, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express. Well that plus I have access to more engineers, machinist, technicians, and engine builders than I can shake a stick at.
Again a quick comparison
- in the car/motorcycle market, we change conventional oil,,, what???? Every 2500-3000 miles. Maybe push a so called synthetic to 5000. ?
- in a diesel market, they change the filter every un-teen thousand miles and change the oil even less. It's abused, heat, load, torque, HP, constant running, etc.
what's the difference? Are cars just that much more abusive or is the oil the difference?

You know, I really hope upon hope that you didn't do this.

There are two reasons you get more mileage out of diesel oil vs unleaded oil.

1) RPMs are way lower than a gasoline motor. 3,500 is roughly redline for a diesel motor. Cruising speed may be around 1,500 rpm.

2) Diesel engines routinely hold a massive amount of oil. Much more than most unleaded motors.

These two factors hold the key to longevity for diesel oil.

If there were better oil than what's on the market, it would be on the market. That's how it works.

I hope you never put a drop of that in your motor.

Just follow the owner's manual, it's really that simple. Problem is, everyone seems to have their technique or heard this or that, but at the end of the day, simply put it's unquantified, unreliablehearsay.

As much as it would hurt some people to admit, the manufacture know best, as they've built the friggin thing, no some random internet ABC part time mechanic. All this talk about "well it's written by lawyers, the first xxx is it" is bull. Anyone who says this, please explain the science and research (pre and post) on engine degradation you've personally done. If not taking it over 7000rpm the first 600miles is bull, then why wouldn't Yamaha keep this handicap indefinitely?

I'm sorry, but every day I got to work, the combined value of the engines of the vehicle I drive is worth 60 million USD. I assure you, any limitation the manufacture lists is followed down to the letter. They don't screw around, simple as that.

Theyre generous with using the words "avoid prolonged operation". It really means theres some wiggle room involved on their recommendations.
True!
