I'm not sure on the technical rules for the new championship. So Superstock is no engine modifications is that correct? What are the engine mods allowed for the superbike class? Those superstock times seen pretty freakin quick, especially on a track like COTA with many hairpins, tight corners & long straights.

Superbike*
Chassis rules as AMA 2014
Engine specs in line with the 2015 World Superbike Championship (gearbox as AMA 2014)
Electronics as 2015 World Superbike Championship with a one-year option to run to AMA 2014 specs
Use of two bikes will be allowed during each event

Superstock 1000*
Engine and chassis to be aligned with FIM Superstock 1000
Brake system may be changed
Superstock 1000 to run on slick tires
Use of two bikes will be allowed during each event
Superbike and Superstock will run together but will be scored separately




In a nutshell, the Superbike class teams can use last year's electronics packages, port the heads, use balanced cranks, con rods, etc. But rules are still pretty stiff for engine mods.

Superstock 1000 can change the oil and the sparkplugs. :crash ECU can be OEM equipment with new software (reflash), manufacturer supplied kit ECU, or a piggyback unit that cannot exceed 1.5x the cost of the OEM ECU (I may be wrong as rules may have changed)


Not a huge delta between factory teams and privateers during COTA testing...

Interesting, thanks for the write up. So they are more like the Evo bikes now in WSBK. Makes sense. Just for some more comparisons, here's the GP lap times from 2014 at COTA

• Fastest Lap 2014 Jack MILLER Red Bull KTM Ajo: Time - 2'16.342 - Speed 145.5
• Fastest Lap 2014 Maverick VIÑALES Paginas Amarillas HP: - Time - 2'10.103 - Speed 152.5
• Fastest Lap 2014 Marc MARQUEZ Repsol Honda Team: Time - 2'02.773 - Speed 161.6


Considering the track layout, 8 seconds down on MM's factory Honda isn't bad for a brand new machine.
