2020 R1 - Bike stalls easy

Hey all,

New to this forum and hoping someone might be able to share some insight.

I recently purchased a 2020 R1. Bike was pre-owned and has 2200 miles. The issue I am having is the bike has a very short clutch engagement range (very late) and the throttle response is very sketchy, as a result it stalls very easily taking off in first if I don’t let the clutch out extremely slow. Bike has a full Akrapovic exhaust, no other mods. I’ve adjusted the clutch free play multiple times and found no difference. Clutch cable appears to be fine and I doubt the clutch plates are bad given the low mileage. I’m thinking the bike might just need a tune. I know the flash tune isn’t yet available for this year. I did purchase the PC V and just waiting for the aftermarket maps to become available. Anyone have any input or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

The mods have nothing to do with the clutch he is describing. I found the R1 clutch was no different from the many other Yamahas I have owned. As someone stated above, the cable might have been removed and not adjusted properly. You will fix this down by the clutch plates, not at the lever. These R1 clutches are great and mine was not sensitive at all. If its engaging almost all the way out it is out of adjustment or the previous owner was a wheelie freak and blew through the clutch. Also check your fork seals if he was busting wheelies.

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t think the clutch cable has been removed but regardless, the tension at the clutch plate and lever feel normal. I thought about replacing the clutch plates, which I may still do at some point in the near future, but honestly I think it may just be me getting used to it. This is my first Yamaha, I’ve been mostly a Gixxer guy in the past, and a few Honda’s. With my Gixxers you barely had to give it any throttle when releasing the clutch and the clutch would engage a lot sooner. I feel like the R1 clutch engages a lot later with a shorter bite range, plus have to give it more throttle. I think once the ecu flash is available and I can run it open loop maybe that will help. Thanks again for the suggestions.
Hi i have a 2019 r1m with this exact same issue. Did you manage to get it sorted. Ive come back to riding after a few years of non riding and feel this is knocking my confidence . Just keeps stalling. Mines fitted with a cr race fit exhaust and woolich quickshifter etc and think its been flashed etc but i bought the bike like it. If you got it sorted what was the issue? Would love to know

I noticed that you just have to give it a little more gas from a dead stop. They're meant for racing and not going stop light to stop light.

It may be the slipper clutch. Definitely different from the previous generations.

I took my 22 out on a first ride and didn't notice the R1 behaving any different from other bikes. I took my 636 out earlier in the day to do a shake down test and had no issues transitioning to the R1. I have stalled different bikes in the past going from one to the other because of clutch lever feel and engagement.

You ever figure this out? Having the same issues.
I have had a 2020 R1 and now have a 2023 R1. (Also 2015, 2006, 1999 R1s) and every year R6 you can imagine. These 2020+ R1 clutches are just not very good. I am track riding only so its not a big deal. I thought it was just my 2020, but my 2023 is the same way. You will get used to it. If it really continues to be a problem you can put different springs in it. You cant adjust it out. Hope this sheds some light. Mine were both purchased new, stock, then heavily modded. The clutch engagement was always the same.

Ahhh thanks for the response. I had a fz6, r3, 3 cbr600s, 2 r6s, and now a r1 and a mt09 and I like to think my clutch control is pretty good but I still stall the r1. Never had issues stalling a bike since my first bike…

Imo the clutch works fine . It’s more of the components that create the issue of stalling And also light flywheel effect
‘look at the perch and lever. Probably 25 years old design. Even the pull of the cable is pretty stiff compared to other brands(hydraulic) once I put a nice perch and lever it changed dramatically.
Good Day my friend. This is a Character trait of the R1. Nothing is wrong. 1 st gear is very long and this is what it takes to get going. Learn to feather the clutch and gas together a bit more to get the bike rolling. I have the same bike. 2020 R1
I think I’ve been having this issue as well when i bought it all stock factory I never noticed it. However, after mods and tune that when I noticed it. Even did a dyno and still no improvement. C & D mode it’s not as bad but def still bugs the shit out of me. @13mph off the throttle and slowing down into a stop or seeing if the bike can maintain a strong idle and it doesn’t. It feels like it’s jerking and gonna stall. Still think it’s your same opinion?
