I just got finished with a novel, er, reply to a question about 1st gear wheelies. Got me to thinking about what I'm trying to learn to do which are 2nd gear stand up wheelies.

Is it right that I'm getting the wheel to come up at about 8 grand? I hear talk about getting it up at 5 and six grand, but I don't see how. I'd like to get it up sooner so I can ride it out longer. I've held a few for about 10-15 seconds when I get lucky. My consistency leaves much to be desired. My primitive technique is as follows:

Roll into 8K RPM territory - Stand up, roll completly off the throttle and bounce on the pegs all at once - Instantly crack the throttle and tug the bars - Lean into the tank and pretend I'm superman - Realize I'm not superman and put the wheel back down before the rev limiter kicks in - Give a thumbs up to the SUV that's giving me the finger for scaring the shit out of them

Also, I'm trying clutch up wheelies in second while sitting down, with terrible results so far. I feel like I would need to redline the bike before letting the clutch out to get sufficient power to stand the bike up. Best I can get are cute little power wheelies.

TO EXUP OR NOT TO EXUP

Earl do you still have the EXUP on your bike? If so try this. 2nd gear, 70mph on the speedo. stand up. push down hard on the bars while closing the throttle, then immediatly tug up and back on the bars while transfering most of your weight onto the footpegs. As you tug up on the bars open the throttle ALL THE WAY OPEN. How hard you tug up, and how long you keep it wide open will decide how quickly it comes up. I wish you luck.:thumbup

Yep, still got it. Plan on keeping it. I'll install a slip-on soon enough (probably a Micron high-mount). So 8 grand doesn't sound crazy without the clutch? Doesn't give me much to play with, unless I start shifting.

I tried clutching it up but my technique is wrong. I went back and read a couple of your old posts addressing this and read about 'flicking' the clutch. I don't think I've tried that yet. I was doing what you said not to do...reving the engine and dumping the clutch. I just need more pratice. I guess May is not too far away. Give me a few pointers and I'll buy your lunch...Taco Bell Okay? hehehe :lol

Its very easy. I can stand up at 30Mph and hold it right to the rev limiter. Dont try to follow directions, just follow your gut and You will learn quick. Wheelies are fun, then remember, the R1 can wheelie Roll on in 4th, I'm up to 3rd at 130. That is pulling them up(roll on) like i was in 1st. So it is definatly a skill to be aquired.
Hope this lights your fire

2nd gear standups.. just standup and roll the throttle. It will start lifting. But to be sure you will lift, give the bike a push with your feets and as the suspension pushes the bike upward.. give more throttle.
You'll find yourself on your back if you're not careful.

I can do 4th gear standups on the R1 now. Just a matter of time before I can do 5th gear.

The reason you are going all the way to the rev limit.. is because you're not at the balance point

4th geAR ROLL ON

I do not know of many bikes that can do 4th gear ROLL ON's. Short of a GP bike that is. You can bounce the r1 up in 4th.

Dammit..........................

I've been at wheelie practice all damned day and you guys make me sick. "It's sooooo easy" :iamwithst . Nah.. really , you guys are good. I managed several 2ft power wheelie's in second today and I also found a vacant lot where I praticed first gear roll ons for a bit. I thought I was really lofting it (mondo mono) but every time I came back my buddy told me the front wheel was only inches off the ground. But I did score with the cool landing gear sound the front makes on touchdown. But where me and Earl differ is that I was getting the second gear roll ons up best when I was at about 45-50mph so critique this: 45-50mph blip to compress and whack it open (with controll) . I was'nt up too long maybe 5 seconds and I also was'nt in control of how long I was up ( I ain't fooling myself ). My riding buds told me that the front was about 2ft off the ground. Things to keep in mind. Today was the first time ever I attempted an on purpose wheelie and I weigh about 205-210 ( take-a-shit dependant ), My bikes only mods are an akra slipon and K&N filter. So speak on it.

I only have a wolf highmount it a slip on bye the way I weigh about 220 and I bounced it up in third last sunday and then I laid it down on a curve not doing wheelies aint that a bitch I didnt have a jet kit either its coming once my bike gets fixed in second I stand up and bounce it at about 40 to 45 MPH and then you have a lot of throttle to play with it took me awhile but I have it down atleast I think it just takes practise just want to get the sweet spot and then I can say that im ok until then im just learning. Cant wait until my bike gets fixed so I can start riding again

You wanna hear a real bitch...........

I forgot to mention that after all my wheelie practice today, we decided to do some grip training. At the end of the session we stopped off at a little roadside store and when I leaned hard on the bars I noticed the right clipon moved. At first I thought it was the whole front but a good look showed that it was only the clipon. When I looked at the bolt all I saw was the bolt hole. The bolt either went on vacation or quit . Either way I'm on my way to the dealership in the morning. Oh , I mean in a few hours.

when in 2nd around 7 grand I goose it, lifts up the front end. let off, compress the suspension and hit it again. 98% of the time she just lifts up:rock. I do it sitting down. cant get the comfort feel in the stand ups yet. Still working on um..... havent tried 3rd really.

When I'm sitting I can bring it up in 2nd around 7500 rpm using the on-off technique. I creep up to about 7000-7500 let off and then snap the throttle and it comes right up. If I stand up I can bring it up earlier using the same technique at about 6000-6500 rpm.

when i'm in 6th, i turn around to make sure there is no one in front of me, pull the clutch in, wind it up to like 10 grand and let go of the clutch while simultaneously standing/ laying with my back against the gas tank and tilt my head back, upside down against the wind visor so i can see. still haven't got quite got the fender grab down though:fact :bs

Altitude a factor

Something to consider. I have an R1 now, but in the early 90's when I had a GSXR-1100 in Arizona, I'd notice when I was down in Phoenix (lower elevation-sea level or below), I didn't have to give it as much gas to wheelie. But when I would ride home to the Flagstaff area (in the mountains), I would definately have to gas it more. At higher elevations, your running a leaner mixture. Thus causing some performance degradation. If you have a fuel injected bike like the 02 R1, you could then theoretically, change the fuel maps (would be cool if you had an on-the-fly switch) to compensate for the elevation changes.

What up guys Im 225 and I have started wheeling out of first and boot shifting into second, I hate doing it but I can roll on second while still seated. I just get the rpm's at like 7grand and pull up like I did on my raptor 4wheeler and have had great success. when You sit the balance point is scarey High my buddie says it looks like im always gona go over but the R1 comes down real quick when you let off gas. Anybody have any suggestions for stoppies? I dont have the balls yet.

Just to give you a little update...

I went out on Saturday night a rode a few wheelies after getting my Micron pipe installed. I think I can feel a small difference in hp. I was able to pull up the front pretty easy sitting down by flicking the clutch in 2nd gear. I pushed the balance point a little and was able ride a few long ones. Man it felt good. I still have more room though because my rpm's are still rising at a pretty good rate, but not as fast as before. It's just a matter of bringing it up a little higher each time out, as I get more comfortable with the balance point. Slow and steady baby, slow and steady.

My stand-ups are still a little squirrelly. I think I'm going to concentrate on my sit downs and really get a feel for the balance point, then get back into stand-ups again.

Thanks to everyone for there input...especially Jay; your advice has been most helpful.
