The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident in Volusia County Thursday.

The accident occurred late Wednesday night near Osteen, and news of the crash is hitting especially hard at Biketoberfest, WESH 2 News reported.

Thousands of bikers are already in Daytona Beach for the first official day of the annual event.

FHP officials said a Winter Springs couple was heading southbound on state Road 415 when their motorcycle struck a large dog in the middle of the road. Both were thrown from the bike.

Then, a family member following behind them on a motorcycle sideswiped the couple's bike. At that point, everyone was alive.

Another couple on a bike stopped to help. The driver tried to flag down a passing car while his passenger gave first aid to one of the injured motorcyclists. But then things got even worse.

The driver of a Honda Civic was distracted by the good Samaritan on the side of the road, causing him to hit the motorcyclists and the other good Samaritan with his car.

Just as that was happening, another Honda Civic hit one of the bikers.

In all, four bikers died.

"It's horrible. It's absolutely horrible," said a woman at Biketoberfest.

"When you ride motorcycles, any little thing can cause you to wreck, and then it's hard to see them once they go down, especially at night," said another biker at the festival.

The Winter Springs couple has been identified as Steven and Jacqueline Redrick. They were the co-owners of Trick Shots. Her father, David Jack Gheen, of Texas, also died in the accident.

FHP officials also said 47-year-old Karen Murgo, of Sanford, who had stopped to help, also died.
