The 02 R1 will be my 1st NEW bike. I know how to do the basic fixes on a bike (oil, brakes, chain, etc), but I'd rather have the dealer do the 1st check up, so could you guys tell me if your dealer includes this service for free? If not, what did they charge?

It's not that bad if you pay for it yourself, the first service on my '01 R1 was about $150 CAN.

If your dealer comps your first service, you have to wonder if you didn't pay too much for the bike. :butt

But good luck anyways, maybe you bought from a kick ass dealer... :thumbup

I worked in the service dept. of a Yamaha/Kawisaki dealer for awhile. There was always confusion on this issue, it usually winds up to the salesman not being clear about maintenance with the customer. We very rarely gave away service on a bike. The shop was considered basically a separate entity from the salesfloor. The mechanics and service mgr usually have their pay and bonus based on the money they bring in. I would expect to pay for the first service unless I have it in writing otherwise, Yamaha certainly won't pay for it. The first service on an R1 is cheap anyway, should be just for a check up and an oil change. Maybe a hours labor plus oil+filter, about $100 where I live.

What is up with the check up. What is going to be checked up? I'm wondering because like nude rider I know how to change my oil and check the chain and all that stuff like that, but I'm trying to decide if I should take my 02 back in at 600 miles to pay for something I can do myself. What will I benefit by taking it back to the dealer? And let me say that the $150 is not an issue. I don't mind paying the money if its going to help my baby in the long run. Also I pick up my blue 02' Monday and I plan on changing the oil myself at 100 & 300 miles and taking it to the dealer for the $600. But do I really need to do that?

In the US you can do your own maintenance and still be covered by warranty if you can prove you did the maintenance. The key is to keep records and receipts.

I tear the end off the oil filter box (with the manufacturer and part number printed on it) and write the date, mileage, type and quantity of oil on the back. I staple the receipts to this and stuff it inside my manual.
