Go into your Network settings..
Thats
Start, Settings, Network.
Then Right click your network.
Be sure to have the following installed AND checked...
~CLIENTS~
-Client for MSN
~SERVEICE~
-File and Printer Sharing For MSN
~PROTOCALLS (you might need your windows disk) to install
-NWLink Net BIOS
-NWLink IPX/SPX Net BIOS Compadible Transport PRotocall
-Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)
If you have all these installed and checked then what you need to so is uninstall and reinstall them again. THEN restart all your comupters. This should work. If not, I have a lot more suggestions but first try that.
BE SURE TO DO THIS ON ALL COMUTERS
AD make sure you right clicked the hard drives of all the computers and under "Sharing and security" make sure on ALL computers that you have the right boxes checked. (on my network I have all my computers HD sharing with each other with no limitations.)
maybe, but i have the same setup in my home and it wont let me in unless I have all that I listed above. Plus, Shadow, you may need to upload some router updates. Like go to the http://192.168... and click on the router updates or go to linksys's website to dl them to your 'puter and upload them to the site (http://192.168...)
plus, be sure under your network settings...thats,
Start-Settings-Network Connections,
~right click your network, then highlight your TCP/IP and hit properties.
Then check to see if you have your IP and DNS obtained automaticly. Then, hit advanced. Make sure that ONLY the DHCP is enabled and click on over to the DNS tab.
Make sure that your Primary and Parent suffixes are checked. And check the registerd for DNS close to the bottem. Then under the WINS tab, be sure to have the "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" is clicked, along with the "default" net bios settings.
One more thing is to check your router IP page to make sure you have it set up correctly.
Hope this helps!
One more thing, might be a little obvious too, but go to your Internet Options under settings, to go the connections tab, then LAN settings and make sure you ONLY have checked in there is the "Automaticly detect settings".
O..
LOL I fogot ONe VERY important thing
Unplug everything (turn off computers) and Turn them on in this order..
wait 30 sec (while everythings off) THEN turn on..
Cable/DSL modem
wait 25 seconds
turn on router
wait 20 sec
turn on computers!
This might help out a LOT
Well, if you feel that you should femove the protocals, please do my last couple of steps before you do that! If not, you might as well have started over from scratch!
AHHAHAHAHAHh, man, I need to read things through slowly, peice by peice. I didnt even catch this....
Hell Shadow, if you need a copy of XP pro just let me know, you've found out the hard way (sorry I didnt catch that earilier) that ME is the worst operationg system by far for ANYTHING.
I would quit while your ahead. The more you mess with ME the worse it gets.
another suggestion is to see whether or not your computers can ping each other and other websites.
if you can go into your dos prompt, or go to "run" and type "cmd" (try this on both computers) when your in dos, type "ping *your other computers IP address*" and see whether it times out or if it pings your other computer. For example, i would type "ping xx.xxx.xx.xxx" and I'd see what it does. Also, try to ping other websites, such as "ping www.yahoo.com" or something along those lines. Tell me what happens.
Hmm... very possible. Btw, did your Devices Manager shows any yellow ! for your network card?
You tried to switch cable, but did you try to switch the port? Cause I heard my occasions that ports fail on Linksys routers. But strange that you still see green light though...
Ok... good news and bad news.
I swapped out network cards and the network works.. kinda.
I can access her computer now... but not the internet...
Maybe I have something messed up with the TCP/IP portion
Did you reset the Modem and the router's memory by doing my steps of turing off everything (unplug Modem nad router)? If you follow my steps Im sure it would work (praying) Here, after unplug/turned off do this
wait 30 sec
turn on modem
wait 30 sec
turn on router
wait 30 sec
turn on computers. Hope you get it!
I'm telling you, you need those protocals w/ win '98 and win ME. Hell, Im on XP and I STILL have to have those protocalls installed. Remember when I was building this computer and I posted some stupid thread doing this...
Computer 1 ....
next messege
Computer 2 ....
next messege
Computer 1 ....
next messege
Computer 2 ....
next messege
I was doing that while the protocals were installed. I could NOT connect to the internet on this one without the protocals
here, Ill try and find that networking website that helped me out...
Hmmm... the one that I dont have is the NW Net BOIS one... I guess I got the other one confused with it... Funny thing though is that it is not listed in the available protocals and I dont know where on the windows cd it is in
Ok, lets say your right val. Your way is pretty simple. Dry and cut instructions. But, if your right, why hasnent it worked for him? We've tryed about everything and it still hasent worked. You know what I think, and I've said it before, is that I should send him a copy of winxppro and kill that fcked up ME he has. Then we'll try your way again. Simple, clean cut. Very easy way. If that doesnt work then we try it my way. As soon as he can get XPpro on his PC, we'll start up the instructions again. And you can go first. I still dont get it though. I had the same setup with my roomie last year and he had....o shit..we only had a switch....Shadow, your not using the switch in the circuit are you? It should go Cablemodem to router then from the 4 port or 8 port router should be your computers with no switch in between. It may sound obvious but Im just trying to go over everything that I can think of.
O and make sure your NOT useing crossover cable inbetween any connection and only CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet cable.
