After the frame polishing project I completed about a month ago, I started coughing and sneezing. I thought they were the normal spring allergies but I'm wondering now if its from the fine dust from the anodizing/aluminum sanding I did while polishing my frame. I was wearing a simple respirator at the time (dust/painting $3.99 type) Anybody experience the same problem or could point to a case online and if there are any serious long term consequences that can happen to the lungs as a result? I'm still coughing a month later. I dont smoke either and keep in good health.

If you have only completed that one project, it may be possible that you have some acute exposure causing that reaction, but I doubt it. You're certainly not likely to suffer serious chronic (i.e long-term) effects from the exposure. It is more likely to be either allergens or biological (i.e. bacterial or viral). No way to know for sure since everyone reacts differently. If you are concerned, see your doctor.

Anyone doing similar projects should wear at least a half-face cartridge-type respirator, with new/properly selected cartridges based on the chemicals of concern. Make sure the respirator fits properly and you are trained in the proper donning and use.:thumbup

I stripped and painted a car w/o the propper resparation device. I was coughing like crazy from the sanding dust, snot wass multi color etc. I would up with a case of chemical pnemonia from the chemicals in the paint, lasted for 3-4 months of coughing until I puked.

Now when ever I do something like that I ude propper ventilation and resparation devices.

I guess once in a while the exposure wont kill you, but why take the chance. As cranky1 said, get a mask (cartrage type) and learn how to use it properly, and if the coughing persists, see a doctor.

Better safe than sorry!

Thanks all

Thanks all for your very helpful advice. If anybody's gonna take on a project like this, definately wear a good respirator, and eye protection. Your lungs and eyes are nothing to mess with.
