Basket Case From Hell

In the middle of a basket case from hell. Figured I’d prowl this forum for answers periodically.
I recently retired and needed a project so this looked like something that would keep me busy for a while. Understatement! A brief catalog of the things I found so far:
Rough/neglected when I bought it.
Didn’t run or turn over.
Rat feces in the throttle body assy.
Missing miscellaneous parts.
How hard can it be? Let the games begin!

Two exhaust valves burnt! Heli-coil in spark plug hole with only one coil/thread intact. Found a good used eBay replacement.

Nothing amiss in the rest of the engine so back together with a head from eBay.

Here’s where I’m at today.
Stator rotor installed incorrectly. Fixed that.
Fucked up the oil rings on two pistons during reassembly, replaced.
Cam chain tensioner is cool, no tools installation but OEM service manual doesn’t indicate how to release upon reinstall (found the answer on this forum, thanks).
Previous owners hacked into the wire harness to install hideous LED lights. Bullet connectors from the hardware store. Waiting for new/used eBay harnesses now.
So far, the main thing I have noticed is that the OEM manual for my CBR1000RR is FAR SUPERIOR to the Yamaha manual. The Yamaha one leaves a lot unsaid and the drawings instead of pictures leave me scratching my head from time to time.
Updates as soon as I get parts!

Has anyone had trouble with intermittent starter engagement? Starter switch, starter cut-off relay?

Check the connection from the main switch to the harness.

We want more pictures of that beauty bud. Slap them up here. She's looking great.

Thanks! It is turning out to be a looker!
Per your suggestion about the starter switch I’ve run through that and a new starter relay and a new starter motor. It’s looking to be wire harness related. The people before me hacked into it at least in one spot so who knows what they could have ruined elsewhere. When I figure it out I’ll post up.

by the way, when I got the starter motor I decided to take it apart just to make sure that it was pretty good. The one that came off the bike was full of oil if you can believe that. Anyway, I discovered that it is possible to put a starting motor together in a such a way that it runs backwards. Homer Simpson would have been proud!

In 2011 Jorge rode an anniversary paint job similar to the one I bought for this resto. The more I read about him the more I liked. That 2009 Catalunya battle with Rossi was truly epic!

Fantastic transformation. I see what you should be doing in your retirement from here on out. Congratulations on the bike and the retirement.
Thanks spartan1. It’s been hard, fun, rewarding, entertaining, educational…

Oh it would be nice to have painted it myself but it’s a fairing kit I got on eBay.

Thank you for sharing !! Looks cool and nicely made!!
Good ol' ricks rebuild kits, had that issue lmao. Frustrating as hell and they don't do a great job at explaining much. But at least now I have a backup as I thought I needed a new one lol
I should have looked into it more when I got my set; I just got the cheapest one on eBay and most of the holes don't line up, I got zipties all over hahah.

Do they offer track fairings as well? I might just put my raven fairings in a display case; spent $700 repainting three pieces of plastic....

I have bought three different fairing kits from different suppliers of aftermarket fairings and think that tjmmotors Security Measure
is the best fit and finish. The kit I bought for this R1 is good but the tjmmotors one I bought for my CBR1000 is better in terms of quality and fit.

The wiring diagram shows a 15 amp fuse for the fuel injection system. Does anyone here know where it is? It doesn’t show a picture or a location either on the parts catalog or in the service manual. Puzzling!
IIRC it's tied in with the fuse on the starter solenoid.

Double checked the wiring diagram, it's tied in to the fuse on the starter solenoid.

Thanks for the confirmation. I saw that but the manual is less than helpful.

Well, it started last Friday. Not sure what I did to fix that, but I was messing around with the headlights and, after realizing I had plugged them in incorrectly (I had the running lights plugged into the low beam circuit) it started. My mind is completely blown.
I’m sure that I must’ve had something plugged in incorrectly or incompletely.
