i got mine up while sitting down; what you have to do is first set back on the seat-----get to 3rd ---run the tack up to about 6.5 to 8 grand ---then off and on gas, but when you get on the gas give the bars a nice pull----and up she comes. i would not tug on the bars real hard the first time--do it a couple of time first to get used to it coming up at such a high speed. PLEASE BE CAREFUL

the 2002 shouldn't be much different than the 2001. at about 80, stand up, one bounce and up it comes. no jet kit pipe, nothing. As stock as it comes at 80 with no problem.

I THINK IN DETROIT BIKES COME UP MUCH NICER THAN THE OTHER 49 STATES. NO JOKE. IT MUST BE THE GAS UP THERE. MY FRIEND HAD A EX500 AND COULD NOT GET THAT TANK UP, BUT WHEN HE MOVED TO DETRIOT AREA HE CAN GET IT UP IN 2ND

I just started doing them on the 02'. In 3rd at about 6500 rpm, pump the handle bars, fan the clutch a little, give some gas. Itll come up. The bike is at 70mph when you start which is cool because you can pull it up easy on the hiway.:)

3rd gear standup easy

3rd gear standups are easy but be careful-on my 02, i bounce her up in third at about 80-she comes up kinda slow then when the exup valve kicks in , she'll stand up quick-you need to have a real sensitive throttle hand-work on manipulating the throttle when you get to the balance point and you should have no problem holding it out for a while-i can ride them out long enough where the front wheel stops spinning but thats bad because you lose that gyro effect and since the R1 is so light, she'll start dancing. This is where I'll lock my knees when I stand up to keep her steady--works great. I have 3,600 miles on my '02 and I don;t have a steering dampener. If your a good rider-you don't need one-besides they only damp out minor vibrations-no way they can stop a tank slapper....peace out....

Do what...man my damper has stopped 3 nasty tank slappers, and as far as being a good rider and you don't need a damper(not dampener,it does not make things wet) You might want to watch SBK a few times and see how many bikes run dampers on there ( I am pretty sure all those guys are good riders):D

man, this one hasn't been hit in a while (this thread), but I finally was messing around trying 3rd gear standups this last weekend and finally got a couple at this Denver altitude. pretty cool feeling going over 100 in a wheelie. I was pulling them up at about 85-90
