What brand chains and sprockets are you guys using (those of you have changed them)? Any reason you chose these brands? Also I've seen chains designated as 520 and 530, what does that mean? Thanks in advance.

520 and 530 is the size of the sprockets and chain.
520 is thinner.. and hence ... lighter. They say this 520 conversion also gives a few more ponies on the rear wheel.

I'll go for 530 though. I don't care for an extra few ponies. I can do pretty sick stuff with the stock gearing.

I have to agree with Swedie here. A few lbs in weight isn't going to get me anywhere any faster, and I really don't need that much more horsepower....
As for sprockets....not really needed in my case, not a big stunter or quarter miler.....I just like the curvy stuff.
Although I don't mind the occasional wheelie, I just can't get to the balance point.....and I don't really try because I don't want to wreck my pretty bike.:fact

Thanks guys. I was getting the impression as I read through some of the older threads that many had the same opinions as you. I do realize that my bike is plenty fast (especially for the type of riding I do) and powerful, and that I really don't need to do this. But you know how it is when you become a junkie on this stuff.
I was thinking about doing this partly because after I put on my akra w/Ivan's jet kit I lost a little down low and the bike seems to bog a little so I was thinking this may help out the bottom end a little. Ivan told me that this would be the case and I'm not too upset about it because it does rip once I get above 5k rpm. Is my thinking wrong? Do you think maybe the settings for the jet kit are a little off? Any thoughts?

well, if the full system and the Ivan's jet-kit is making the bike cough below say 4k RPM.. then I believe there can be more done to the jetting of your carbs.

Going down or up in sprocket sizes won't really make a big difference. I can assure you that.. since you'll still have the problem with the cough'ing engine below 4000rpms. I say, leave the bike to a Dynojet authorized dealer and have them fine tune the bike.

Any full system you use that gets rid of the EXUp will have the same basic results. They will all suffer below 4k. I also have the IVAN's AKRA mojo. I love it. it will not accept large throttle opening below 3800rpm. By 4,000 it is pulling , and once at 5,000 it is killer. You can lower the needles one clip position to help the bottom end, but you will loose some of the top end.

You will just learn to live with it. I really don't notice it anymore. I just wait a bit later to shift, and make sure I have the RPM's up If I wanna race.

I went one tooth less on the front sprocket. I love it. I have heard many happy with going up 2 teeth on the rear. Either way it's just a bit more acceleration. With a small top speed loss.

I personally do not love the idea of a 520 chain on a 1000cc bike, but thats just me. Many people have it and love it. Good luck.:thumbup

Thanks Swedie. Yeah I know that the sprockets won't stop the bike from bogging but I was hoping to cash in on the power as it was coming back into the power band quicker.

Ivan says that this bog is normal for a full system. I don't know I'm curious if anyone else had this happen?

Also, I was advised against having the bike dyno tuned by the local shop. They say it is too stressful on the bike and many dyno operators don't know what they are doing. Is there any truth to that?

I use the 520 AFAM kit on my scoot, love it. sure looks a helluva lot better, and with a lighter chain, there is less rotating mass. less rotating mass=better flickability.

Anytime you can reduce rotating mass is a plus. Do it where you can. Thats if your concerned about twisties.............

I have all the items talked about (Full Akro system, Ivan's Jet Kit, and a 520 chain conversion with up two teeth in the rear.). Honestly I don't feel any difference with the sprocket change, but I do try to keep the rpm's above 4k for power that is on demand.

So IMO keep the stock chain (don't waste the money on the conversion), and just stay in the power band. No stock Gixxer 1000 will be able to keep up with you.

The reason for the 520 conversion is just a Dank stated prior...basically the sprockets and the chain weigh less, so you have less rotating mass. Which equals better handling and a few extra ponies, due to the lighter weight.

If you are riding it on the street it is going to totally be your preference, I prefer the 520, but then again I race mine on the track, so every little bit helps.

One thing to pay attention to is the tensile strength of the chain, you'll find that a high quality 520, like a DID ERV2, will have the same tensile strenghth as the average 530.

Either way you'll be fine.

just restating the obvious...

My apologies (for the reason that the title states)

but yes, less rotating mass is the real reason - and the difference is more substantial than just the weight difference between sprockets - the effect is that number times 4 (approximately) that is the factor for calculating rotating mass difference - turn in is easier and doesn't fight you as much (and the 02 IS a bit heavier to turn in than the 00/01)

THe difference is beyond noticeable and with a 180 on the back, it is a great difference. FYI, an ERV2 has about a 8900 lb tensile strength and the RK's are about 8200....either way the strength is more than plenty and yes, very comparable to a 530...
