I am wondering how often I shoud clean and lube / lube only ? or if i should even ever lube only...

i figure i should lube it every 300 to 400 miles (right?) but should i clean it every time i lube it?

is there any trick to lubing your chain and not have a ton of lube from flying off everywhere that first ride? I give my chain a good shot of lube then take a rag and try to get off as much excess as I can. No matter how much effort I give it, still greasey oil everywhere everytime!

Get good quality lube like PJ1. THere is another lube that is good, I think it's called Bel-ray, but it goes on white. THe PJ1 goes on clear and dries pretty sticky. Make sure you put it on a warm chain though. THe only problem I have with PJ1 is that both cans I've used like to leak when you are spraying it, and it gets all over your fingers. I use a chain brush that came with cleaner (about $15) to clean the chain, but I've started using WD40 too with a rag, and wrap the rag over the top and bottom side of the chain and run it back and forth to wipe down all the rollers. Either have your bike on a rear stand or just push the bike to advance the chain to clean the other parts.

Bel-Ray looks like white grease. The PJ1 is clear, and dries kind of shiny. It comes out a little thicker than WD40, but once it's dry, it feels kind of like a melted lollipop, really sticky, but just a thin coating.

I use the bel ray. Like they said just warm up the chain first. But I have never had a problem with fling just give it a few minutes to set up before you ride. It does look white but.... it works great so that is what I have stuck with.

oh yeah and make sure you put it on the side of the chain that makes contact with the sprocket.

Ahh! That looks like the brand I use. But it's not Chain WAX it's just chain lube. Looks like the chain LUBE will be regulated to use on the Huffy and not the R1. Gonna get me some chain WAX.

The bad thing about the wax is it cakes up thick around the sproket teeth after awhile. I've had good luck with PJ1 and Honda red cap chain lube.

Bel Ray chain wax is what I use. Heat the chain (short or long ride), bike up on the rear stand, WD40 on a shop rag, rotate the rear wheel(in neutral of course), clean shop rag on goes the Bel Ray chain wax......no more than a 10 minute job minus the ride every 500 miles + or - 100 or so.
