Looking at this R1 recently listed on eBay and bit confused. Yamaha YZF-R1 – 1999 – 4XV Red & White | eBay

I thought the classic red and white was 1998, and in 1999 it had the red uppers. Anyone know if they actually built this colour in 1999 or would this be a 'remake'?

Nope 98 only for that colour scheme, maybe a late registered bike though

A lot of peeps like to change up their colors. 98-99 were the exact same bike., So changing fairings isn't a big deal and it didn't cost an arm and a leg like it does today.

Hard to tell from the front but is that a David Jeffries V&M Yamaha replica paint scheme? I was gutted years ago when I learned of his passing but that guy was THE MAN at the IOM TT for a while there on that beast of an R1!
