I've got a $500 deposit for my Blue 04 R1 which should be arriving next week. They've quoted me at 11,600.00 OTD. This will be my 2nd R1 and I'm totally stoked!!

Lately, I've been seeing posts about out of state Dealers like PROCYCLE USA in Columbia, MO who are selling OTD (w/out sales Tax) for 8999.00.

Question #1. Any chance of getting that deposit back? (for the record I have a pretty good relationship with N. TX Yamaha as I have purchased 3 Sportbikes from them.

Question #2. Besides the 12 hr roundtrip drive, any disadvantages from purchasing out of state.

Not including Sales Tax, I could save $2600 by going out of state. Thats money that could be used for some great MODS.

As long as you got it in writing it should not be a problem to get
your deposit back. Plus, they know you since you have been a
past customer. Just tell them you have changed your mind or
your not able to get a bike at this time.

As for buying out of state. Well, that's what I did. I bought my '03
R1 in Jan of '03 and the dealers around here in Florida would not
go down in price. 10,299.00 plus all the B.S. fees. So, I went out
of state and paid 8999.00 with no B.S. fees for my '03. When I
got it back to Florida I then paid sales tax on it which I would of
had to do with a florida dealer. If you have found a dealer who is
selling the '04 for 8999.00 go for it. That seems very low to me.
Check out Lake Hill Motorsports in Miss they have great prices.
But, then again the '04 is in high demand too.

Thanks for the reply Skeeter. My deposit is on a credit card, so I shouldnt have any problems. Plus Im friends with the owner. I just dont want to be a problem customer. You're smart to of gone out of state. I'm going to do the same and Honestly I dont understand why anyone would pay Sticker plus all the BS charges. Thanks again for the info. Pics to come....

I'm not sure about all states, but I've done this a few times here in IL. When I have bought vehicles out of state and brought them back into IL. I still have to pay the full sales tax as if I bought it in this state. State Tax, county tax, city tax, etc. They still get it from me. Otherwise you can't get a title or a plate.

Here is the BEST way I have found. In IL. the tax on a private party sale of a motorcycle is a flat fee ($25 I think off the top of my head), but if you buy from a dealer you have to pay 7%. Check you individual state, but to me I keep an eye out for those nearly new bikes from private sellers. Even paying a little more than a dealer to a private seller can be cheaper in the end.

I actually tried to get my deposit back from procycle of columbia, becuase I was tired of waiting and decided to dish out a few hundred more and buy locally. Turned out they wouldn't let me get my deposit back. But I'm kinda glad now that they didnt allow that because I'm now next on the list for a blue r1 and even though i'm still waiting, I know I'm getting a great deal.

I would go back and ask for your deposit back. When they ask why, you tell them you found a better deal. If you are friends with the owner, maybe he would cut you the same deal. Offer them a little more than the $8999, roughly equal to the cost of you either having the bike shipped to you from wherever it was, or the cost of you going to get it. Maybe that would get you friend to give you the better deal.

Otherwise, get your money back, go get it, and ride it there the day you get it and tell everyone in the dealership about what a sweet deal you got some where else! :)

As long as you didn't sign something saying the deposit is non-refundable you will be fine...also....it may not be worth the hassle to drive all the way to pick up a bike in another state....do all the title work yourself...trailer the bike back...so on and so forth...

Its actually not tht much work...no different than buying a used bike. You just take your bill of sale to the local tag place and pay them the taxes tag and title fee's fo ryour state and you are done. Not a big deal at all. And hte trip out of state was actually pretty fun for me. Got to take off for a few days and tour the beautiful countryside.

My feeling on that is that most dealers will offer bikes at a higher amount cuz they know someone will pay for it..... :yesnod

:lol I cant believe that you bought that. Unless you signed somethign saying that you cannot get your money back then you can. When they told you they wouldnot then you should have told them that they could see you in court when you would sue them for the deposit plus court costs.

It is illegal for them to hold your deposit unless you signed something saying that you were giving them a non-refundable deposit. Thats all. Tell em you want to get it cheaper somewhere else, maybe they will bargain, you never know.
