I'm just curious if there are any disadvantages to removing my chain guard. I don't plan on riding in the rain or anything.

Speaking of my chain, how often are you supposed to lube it? Is it possible to overlube it?

You definitely do not "NEED" a chain guard. The benefits to having one is that if you over-lube the chain or use a thick lube, it will not fling all over your nice clean bike. The chain guard will also keep goof-balls from sticking their foot in the chain, but what are these people riding bikes for in the first place? Look at show bikes and race bikes....No guard. As for my bike, that chain is naked!

Lube your chain after washing, riding in rain, or every 600mi....

hope this helps.:thumbup

Of course if the chain ever breaks while riding it's nice to have a chain guard there so it doesn't whip into your calf causing a HUGE laceration. That's kind of why it's called a chain guard.

That wimpy little plastic thing isn't even going to deflect the chain if it comes unhinged. It's just there to keep the flingoff from gettin' on the bike. I have heard of people getting bit by broken chains though, and i can imagine what sort of gash it would make.... Yuk!

That reminds me of a story I heard yesterday.

This one guy that rode for Kawasaki (moto-cross) way back when, used to ride with no breaks. As he rocketted past a buddy of mine, my buddy saw his chain come off and fly thru the air.

No breaks. No chain. We still don't know how/if he stopped. :crash
