Getting close to doing my first service. Looking at the bike it almost looks like I could just take off the small aluminum panel B to access the oil filter. The manual says to remove cowl A.

Is removal of cowl A necessary or could I just loosen it?

Well finally had some time to check for myself. The answer is you do have to remove panel B AND cowl A. It's so dumb--a small change in the design of the cowl would have allowed you to do and oil and filter change by only removing one small panel.

If I did not have the R1M with the expensive carbon fiber--I might consider trimming some of the material off to make this process simple.

Superfly999--Yes, it appears so. The part number is 5GH-13440-50. I don't think they've changed much. I had a 2003 R1 and it was 5GH-13440-00

All i did was remove the alum panel and the quick fasteners in the mid. It pulls out plenty far enough to get to the filter. It sucks that it spills on the exhaust though. I will be thinking of a way to catch this oil next time.

Use aluminum foil and wrap the pipes. :yesnod

Exactly how I did it, I also made a small funnel like object out of cardboard for under the filter so the oil didn't drain allover the header pipes...Very quick and easy to change the oil on this bike..

Good ideas. On the M the carbon fiber is not very flexible--so that's a challenge.

A small sheet of aluminum foil does work to keep oil off the headers. The issue I had was using a standard funnel to get oil into the engine. I bought a redline funnel.

Yeah you pretty much have to hold the funnel. Unless you buy repsol. It has a hose in the jug
