Easy,Cheap '04 GP shift

Everything can be had at ACE Hardware:

2 ea. 1"Dia. X 1/2"W X 3/8" hole Collar stop
2 ea. 8mm X 45mm 12.5 grade bolts
1 ea. 6mm X 45mm 12.5 grade bolt
1 ea. 12" X 1/4"ID .050 wall alum. tubing

Update 4/27/06: Go to Pg. 3 for upgraded part and #. Stock shift arm started bending and I replaced it with this and have had no further problems what so ever in over 2 yrs. of service.

Disassemble the rearset and Shift rod assy.

The 2ea. 8mm bolts need to be trimmed 13mm. This allows for the most unthreaded shank going thru the rear set and spacer.

Cut a piece of the tubing with a tubing cutter at exactly 1", no less.

Remove the Shift shaft lever on the motor. Remove the Hiem joint by removing the attach bolt under the rubber boot. Install the spacer, Hiem joint, and new 6mm X 45mm bolt w/washer back on the shift shaft lever with locktite. Reinstall the shift shaft lever so that it's 90 degrees to shift rod. Install the 1/2" thick collars behind the rear sets and torque! Your done! Works great and inexpensive!

Thanks! I thought so! Beats bending or spending a ton! Best part is you can go back to stock configuration quick and easily if you so desire!

Nice, very professional looking, you obviously have good fabbing skills. I've seem some others using the bent stock rod but this is by far better looking.

Thanks for sharing.

Very clean looking! Do you notice the 1/2in offset at all?

Does anyone know the cost of the rod? In case someone wants to do take the bent rod route.
Can't tell just riding around town, but haven't been able to go out and drag knees yet with it! I do presume that it might lessen the amount of ground clearance a little, but now you can get some 1/2" plate and fab out some relocation plates (instead of spacers) to put your pegs where ever you want them (no frame to limit how far you go up or back)! Of course you'd have to lengthen the rod. Already have a plan for that too! lol

Ya know... the only thing that worries me is the extra stress on the shifter arm while shifting....

I've banged on it pretty hard for about an 1 1/2 hr. and it didn't bend! That's why I used a 12.5 grade bolt there too! Shifts really nice. My R6 had an Attack Reverser on it and all my race bikes were GP shift! Really missed it! Glad it's back! Time will tell on the durability of it I guess! I do believe it will be fine though!

Forgot to mention, you don't have to worry about the cases taking undue stress either cause there are needle bearings at both ends of the shift shaft (behind the seal and at the detent side also)!

I think it's around $25-$30 bucks! Might be wrong though, don't hold me to it! lol I think bending it just looks hokey IMO!

Looking at the last pic, I just realized you don't have to dismantle the shifter rod anymore to take off the sprocket cover! Never even saw that! Woo Hoo! lol

 Yea, but the rod is on the outside of the frame. To each their own I guess. BTW, I spent this much on this mod $0.00.....
