I just wonder if anyone else here was a fan of Lawson. Sure everyone talks about how great Rainey was and Schwantz and Doohan, but it amazes me how Lawson's name often gets forgotten when people start talking about the best racers. OK since Rossi did back to back championships on different bikes for the first time since Lawson did it ,we heard Lawsons name brought up. But what people often forget when comparing all these past greats is the calibre of competition they faced.Lawson raced against Schwantz,Doohan,Rainey,Mamola and Gardner. And Lawson made a move that was unheard of at the peak of his career and still grabbed podiums on what was considered to be a totally uncompetetive motorcycle. (the Cagiva) Can you imagine Rossi switching to Aprilia at this point in his career? Lawson did what could be viewed as the same thing.Did he win a championship on the Cagiva.... hell no but he managed to make it competetive against the top riders on the best bikes in the world. If you ever get a chance to watch any classic races with Lawson I highly recommend it. :yesnod

Don't forget King Kenny. Didn't he win a couple back in the day? :dunno

It seems that the premier class in motorcycle racing is always dominated by one rider. No disrespect to Rossi, but it's hard to be any more dominant than Doohan was (he won 13 of 16 races one year). Lawson had his turn. I just wonder who will succeed Rossi. Nicky maybe? Hopper? We'll have to wait until the 800s in '07 though, 'cause no one's touching Rossi next year... :thumbup

I watch first hand as Eddie won at Daytona Speedway on a Vance & Hines OWO1 Yamaha 750cc Superbike and then walk off hand in hand with the chick from the TV show "Wings" What day. I have Eddie's autograph on my sweat stained Daytona 200 T-Shirt still hanging in my closet. Not washed mind you.

My Dianese Marlboro reps have his sig on them. That was a great race. That piece of crap 750 with its problems and that loon Russell to look for. All my buds were rooting for Russell. But they forgot who was on that piece of crap. Eddie. Oh it was great to see him mug Russell in the chicane. To this day i use that race as an example. No matter how bad things look, keep plugging away. Stay cool, calm and collected. What a teacher, that Eddie Lawson
