Hello, I am new to the forum. I was out riding yesterday and my bike (2001 R1--red) just went dead. I had no lights, turn signals, no nothing. I checked all fuses and they were good. I put my seat back on and turned my switch on and I had very faint headlights and dash lights. I charged my battery today and the bike seems to be working fine. I am putting out approx. 11.5 volts
@0-5000 RPM, but when i turn on the high beams and turn signals, it drops to approx. 10.5 volts. Could this be electrical or a battery problem and are these types of problems covered under warranty. Please help:confused:

When your stator dies and your engine is running, it will continue to run until the battery dies, and it will not, of course, recharge that battery. Need to look into the stator probably. Hope this helps !!

Champion has go tthe right idea, also check all the connections. There is a three wire connector on th eleft side(if memory serves) and it will come loose and get corrosion in it,so it may be as simple and cleaning up a connection.Otherwise Champion has supplied the exact flow chart you need.Oh Ya

Thanks guys, I think that I'll let the dealer check the stator so they wont say I screwed somethin up. I have had bad experiences with bikes that were under warranty. This forum is pretty cool and I am glad to be a member.:yesnod

Hi, firstly let me symphatize. I hate electrical problems - they're the worst to fix. It looks as if the respones above is quite correct. The bike's not charging the battery.

Here's how I would do this for a car, but it should be quite the same for a bike: Seeing that you've got a voltage meter, with the bike switched off you've got about 11.5 Volts across the battery ? Now start the bike and rev it at about 3000 rpm - what is the Voltage reading now ? It should be somewhere between 12-13 volts ? If it stays the same or drops slightly, then you've only got life equal to the amount left in the battery. The drop when you switch on high beam etc is normal, but with the bike running it shouldn't be as low as 10.5.

I've got an 2001 (maybe the color is the problem - mine's blue !) and will do a set of tests tonight and give you the different readings to compare.

Thanks for all the replies, the dealership is gonna handle it for me under warranty. I checked on the '02's and they are gettin a few blue, red and silver but most are already spoken for. I was considering putting down a deposit for a silver one but they are gone and the next shipment isn't for a while. I guess its time for an Akrapovic and an undertail right?
