Just took the R1 out for its first actual "ride on the twisties".. Just a quick background though... ive been riding for a year now.. started on an F4... and through the year ive owned 2 F4s and 2 929s... loved them a lot. Still have the F4 as my Race Bike.

First thing i noticed is my freaken wrists were numb after the ride... due to the ergonomics as well as the vibrations. Probably something i need to get used to..
My only true complaint though about the bike is how "twitchy" it is. Just going straight the bike just doesnt feel very "stable", and coming out of turns im getting a few tank-slappers. Does anyone else feel this way about their R1?? I was told that maybe it was the tire selection i made... i put on a set of Dunlop 208GPs and was told the profile is much more angled which ineffect made the bike more twitchy? On my 929 it's always felt dead solid going straight and coming out of turns. THough many people tank slappers are a very common thing with the 929.. i rarely experienced it on the 929. So now im questioning the tires i chose and maybe i should dish out the money for a steering damper...(something i thought i wouldnt ever have to purchase)

The 02 R1 is awesome though... the FI is soooo smooth compared to the 929, and its got a sh!t load more mid-range. It also turns is much quicker...

You may be getting headshakes (something the '02 R1 is much LESS prone to than the earlier models due to the '02's less radical steering geometry), but you are definately not getting "a few tankslappers".

I've had mine on the track and haven't had any of the problems you're talking about. The front gets a little shaky on corner exits but that's only under hard exceleration, understandably. My bike is smooth and predictable at all times, no complaints. Granted, it's not near as comfy as a Honda (i had 2 F3s and a 98' 900RR) but I expected that when i bought it. My wrists get a little numb from the vibration but it's not unbearable. I'm very pleased with my first Yamaha, but it's not close to a Honda overall. Overall, I think you're having tire issues.

Yeah i should have probably called the twitchiness "headshakes"...however, i DID get a few tankslappers..

I will definetely have to look into my tire issue. But hopefully the only problem here is just me getting used to a Yamaha.

thanks for the input.

check for tire pressure.

I got
Front: 2,5Kg - Machadam 100
Rear: 2.8Kg - Pirelli Dragon Evo

stable as hell! I have gotten a few tankslappers but not out of corners.

Maybe you're too fast when you bend the bike up straight from out of a corner? and therefor the bike tends to loft the front wheel and as it lands.. the bike is really not in line anymore.. but instead forced over to its other side.
Try and have the bike do the actual turning...

I did 1100km in twisties this Sunday and I never got a tankslapper or a headshake.. not a single one.

Do you do a lot of counter-steering in and .. maybe out of corners?

Headshake can also be mitigated with proper suspension adjustment so you may want to adjust it to your riding style. When I hear "tankslapper", I think of the bars going lock to lock :crash. Is this what you are experiencing? If so, to have a few must be pretty frightening. I experience headshake, some of been major, but no tankslappers yet :no.

i have the vibrations on mine but no probs with slappers. never had one yey. have came close on a few times. I used up that 208 at 2800 miles. put a 207 on and I dont really feel a difference. hope it last longer. 2800 miles and only smoke tire one time for about 5 sec. with the new tire she is a little different in stright aways but I only have a couple hundred miles on the new tread. thinking a few hundred more she should smooth out as tire breaks in.

I actually had 2 tankslappers... which is why i put this post up.. I typically dont complain much about bikes and i know what im doing when it comes to riding bikes pretty hard. Yeah i was pretty freaked out, but i;ve experience much worse "experiences" on the bike at race tracks (Was going 120mph mid-turn at Willow Springs turn 8 and the wind was blowing so dayam hard my entire bike was sliding the opposite way of the turn while i hit a fault neutral, i have plenty of stores about scary sh!t that happens while racing.) I will definetely have to mess around with the suspension and get it dialed in correctly.

My tires pressures are: Front:32 Rear: 30psi. standard setup i always run on both my Race Bike as well as my previous 929's ive owned.

Overall sorry about my b!tchin... i just wanted to know if this was a common thing, but from the replies im getting i guess im just going to have to adjust my riding style and suspension to the bike... as well as getting used to a Yamaha.

Thanks for all the replies.

Gary, I see you are in San Diego. Why don't you come out to our Streets of Willow trackday on 5-23-02. It's very inexpensive, you get fed, you get a t-shirt, there will be LOTS of open track time, not many bikes at all will be there, and we have a bunch of cool guys, and at least one cool gal comming out. Starts 7:30 AM, ends 4:00 PM. Have paramedics all day, etc, etc. Only $99.:thumbup

Im actually considering doing that!! :) But.... i already turned in fee's to race this weekend at Willow Springs big track...However, if i dont race this weekend there is a 50% chance i may do that trackday. Any idea how many slots are open still?? dont know if i dish out anymore money considering i juss bought the new R1 and it looks like im going to need a damper which i didnt plan i would be needing.

If i do go i might bring the F4 race bike as well as the R1 !! =) Do they allow that without charging you more?

As far as I know, bring both bikes, as long as you can only ride one at a time, you'll pay one fee. Tech inspection on street bikes only requires tires in new or good condition, all lights taped, brakes in good condition, mirrors removed (or folded back). I don't know how many slots are available, so at this rate I'd call and reserve a spot.
