...From a kid that is 16 years old (so he said) and that his dream is to buy an R1. What a fuckin' joke. I get mad at that

My reply was simple
"No fucking way" :machinegu

Come on now! Why the biggest and baddest first? You're young. You got plenty of years ahead of you to LEARN how to ride. Get a SMALLER cc'ed bike.
At 16 you should ride a moped/scooter. Not a fricken 150Hp Sportbike!

Totally agree Sweedie!

Its not just the age, even a 30-something that fancies getting into bikes. Whats the point it going straight to the top!

It would be sad not to appreciate how good the R1 is because you have no experience on anything else. You would just think "this is how a bike is then" ....
How wrong:no

they dont see the unrideable-for-unexperienced bike;

all they see is a beautifull piece of machinery and have been seduced by the legend...

we would all fall for this being at their place.

when i was 12 yrs old(that"s 1978)i was fantasizing on a yamaha XSeleven midnight special...1100cc...

a mechanic in a garage had one in my town;this garage was nowhere near my home, but every day i was to make that 30 minutes detour just to look at it a few minutes, even if it meant that i got a spanking from mom every day too.

the lines, shapes and looks of the big bore bikes are/were more appealing than the smaller siblings.

now what do you think i did when i got 18?

bought myself a 1100cc bike...and crashed it 2 months later.

At 16 he won't even be able to ride that long until he will crash. Better to learn on something way smaller that he can manouver with armstrength if necassary.

And at 16.. DUDE! 16!!!!!! Get a 125cc.

He did say he had riding dirtbikes a lot. A DIRTBIKE iS NOT A SPORTBIKE!!!
Dirt is not asphalt!!!

Arghh! Makes me so mad!

I rode dirtbikes for about 4 years and got my first Honda CR250r when I was 13. I am very respectfull of the power and am not looking to ride wheelies and squid about... I am about to go finance an 02 R1. What do you guys think? Personally I think I can handle it.

Well understand that if you have not ridden one of these or a similar bike then you have no frame of reference. I have ridden dirtbikes since I was 9 and the first bike i had was a Suzuki GS500E (they had real clip ons back then :)). What a great starter bike, thank god it was all I could afford at the time. I progressed through the ranks and learned how to ride a small cc bike fast first. it makes a huge difference. Did I mention the word huge? Really.

If i would have had the $$ I would have bought the white and blue 1989 GSXR1100 and probably would have injured myself and definitely would not have learned to ride as well.

Do I think someone who is motorcycle competant can "Drive" an R1 as a first bike? yes I do.
Do I think the same guy can "ride" an R1 as a first? No I dont.

I liken the dirtbike thing to saying that since you can ride a fast gokart then you can handle a Dodge Viper all out. uhh, no. and you dont even get the enjoyment of taking a bike to its limits because if you do so as a newbie on an R1 you will die. Period.

no frame of reference.
